Continguts

1. Session 1. Presentation: Penology in Europe; community sanctions and measures in Europe: basic definitions and statistics about punishment in the community. Community sanctions and measures vs. imprisonment.

2. Session 2. Relevant actors in the design, implementation and supervision of offenders in the community: public attitudes and punitivism; professionals; the trend towards privatisation

3. Session 3. Supervising offenders in the community I: Probation. The origins and evolution of probation: from saving souls to the management of risky subjects in the community.

4. Session 4. Supervising offenders in the community II: Community service/unpaid work. International variation: from "paying back to the community" to therapeutic interventions.

5. Session 5. Supervising offenders in the community III: Early release from prison, parole and the extension of control beyond imprisonment

6. Session 6. Problems and discussions: diversity; electronic monitoring; punishing/treating offenders with drug or mental health issues.

Avaluació i qualificació

Reading and discussing academic texts and reports on the topic Attending lectures (in the classroom and only if needed due to health restrictions via streaming/videoconference) and actively participating in class discussions is evaluated 15 No
Final exam (with materials) Final written exam, 85% of the total marks. The exam consists of the description of a situation or problem (a short news extract, for example). The text will be given to students at least 48 hours before the exam date. At the exam, the lecturer will present students with 3 questions. Students may use all the materials from the classes (class notes, pPower pPoint presentations, papers discussed, dictionary, etc.) in order to answer the questions. If the health and safety conditions permit it, the exam shall be held at the University. 85

Qualificació

The lecturer will not evaluate the quality of the English language used, but rather the extent to which students have mastered the contents of the subject. Although English is the language of instruction, it is understood that most students will not be native English speakers.

Criteris específics de la nota «No Presentat»:
Not completing the exam shall lead to the consideration that the student has not completed the course and the mark obtained shall be No Presentat.

Avaluació única:
For students unable to attend and participate in lectures (in a classroom or via streaming/videoconference), the final exam shall represent 100% of the marks.

Requisits mínims per aprovar:
In order to pass this course, the student must obtain an mark of 5 or more.

Tutoria

One-to-one tutorial sessions requested by students are to be held at the lecturer's office or online if needed according to Covid-19 safety regulations. Google meets or another platform provided by the University may be used to hold the meetings.

Observacions

In order to successfully complete the course and make the most of it, it is recommended that students attend all lectures (in the classroom or through streaming if classes are to be suspended due to Covid-related restrictions) and complete the assigned tasks (reading and discussing). If attendance is not possible in any form, please contact the lecturer.

Modificació del disseny

Modificació de les activitats:
The University and the lecturer shall try to ensure the maximum physical presence in the classroom. If it is possible, all lectures shall take place in the classroom. If it is, however, necessary due to Covid-19 restrictions, lectures may be followed online.

If health conditions and safety regulations make it necessary, that is, if Health and University authorities make staying at home compulsory, all activities shall go online. Classes shall be held at the established dates and times, using methods that allow for student participation.

If health conditions change for the better and authorities allow full presence of students and lecturers at the University without restrictions, all lectures shall take place in classrooms at the Faculty of Law.

Modificació de l'avaluació:
If possible given health conditions, the exam shall take place in a classroom. Students may bring all the material necessary to do the exam (papers, regulations, class notes, etc.).

In case authorities impose full mobility restrictions and the obligation of staying at home, all evaluative activities shall take place online.
Participation through Google meets and other platforms provided by University shall be assessed (15% of the full mark) and the exam shall be undertaken by students at home, during a specific period of time (85% of the full mark).

As stated, one to one tutorials can be held in the lecturer's office or online, via Google meets or the platform provided by the University.
