Over her career, her lines of research have focused on studying microRNA expression, miRNA delivery (as therapeutics), gene expression and inflammatory markers in relation to: (1) allergic diseases, (2) pre- and post-natal growth alterations, (3) metabolic disorders, and (4) neurobiology.

From all the mentioned lines of research, financed competitive projects have been obtained: 2 international projects as Principal Investigator (MOBJD526, 2019-2020; MOBJD106, 2017-2019); and 4 international projects (SPIOMET4HEALTH 899671-2 H2020, 2021-2025; SMVBS18546, 2019; PUT1669, 2017-2020; ITEA 2-ip11027, 2012-2015) and 8 national projects as associate researcher. Currently, Dr. Carreras-Badosa is involved as a research assistant in the project: TED2021-130409B-C53 (2022-2024) Biomarcadores d’efectividad del tratamiento en pacientes con COVID persistente y afectación congnitiva: efectos de un programa de rehabilitación digital (NextGenerationEU) granted to Dra. Elisabet Kádár (Universitat de Girona).

Results have been published in high-impact journals. Of note, Dr. Carreras-Badosa has first authored 14, and co-authored 37, scientific publications with a total of up to 668 citations with an accumulated H index of 16 (as for January 2024).

Results have been also disseminated in scientific meetings for a total of over 74 meeting contributions. Whenever possible, results have also been communicated to society via press notes.

Dr. Carreras-Badosa has also participated in other divulgation activities to society, such as scientific workshops aimed to schoolers and high-schoolers (2017, 2021) and a video series of “Women in Science” aimed to the general public (2023).

Her scientific and technical skills acquired over her research career include: DNA techniques (genotyping PCR for SNPs, qPCR, bisulfite conversion and pirosequencing analyses), RNA and microRNA techniques [real-time qPCR, Taqman low-density arrays (TLDA), GeneChip microarrays], protein measurements (ELISA and Western blot), explant (adipose tissue) cultures, cell cultures (in vitro studies), nanoparticle for cellular delivery of small RNAs (nanotechnology), microscopy (light, fluorescent, confocal and electronic microscopy), animal experimentation (in vivo models using Wistar rats and CBL mice). She also acquired excellent skills on management of clinical data, biological sampling, creation, maintenance and curation of data bases and statistical analyses (using SPSS and R programs).

A highlight in Dr. Carreras-Badosa research career is the international collaborations established mainly during her international post-doctorate stay in Estonia (2017-2020) as well as other collaborations over her research career.

Over her career, Dr. Carreras-Badosa has contributed to the training and mentoring of young researchers within the research groups (i.e. 1 technician, 2 bachelor students, 3 master students and 6 PhD students), as well as has supervised (formal thesis supervision) 2 master students (UdG, 2020 and 2021) and is currently supervising (formal thesis supervision) 1 master student and 1 PhD Student (UdG, ongoing).
