Research Interests

My main interest is in evaluating coastal sediment and microplastics transport processes and their impact on aquatic environments. I study the transport of microplastic particles associated with hydrodynamics and their interaction with suspended sediments. The buffering role of aquatic vegetation, ponds and lagoons to decrease the microplastic pollution has also been an aim of my work. The project in what I am working as PI is PlastikHUM, focused on the transport of microplastics in wetlands. More information on this project can be found in https://www.udg.edu/ca/projectes/plastikhum. I am also working in an EU Cost Action (PRIORITY) dealing with the transport of microplastic particles in coastal ecosystems. More information in https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA20101/. I am also working in a project to determine the effect of resuspension processes in contaminated coastal lagoons (WINDERS). My publication list encompasses several studies related to the flow through aquatic vegetation under both unidirectional and oscillatory flow regimes and sediment and microplastics transport from plumes or gravity currents and sediment transport in rivers.

I am also interested in finding eco-friendly nature-based solutions (NbS) for treating wastewater. I have been studying Daphnia magna filtration and how this can be applied to a tertiary NbS treatment. The effects that temperature, light intensity, daylight hours have on Daphnia magna filtration, swimming and their mortality along with how Daphnia magna develop in the presence of typical wastewater chemicals and microplastics as emerging contaminants are being investigated. I have recently worked in an EU project, INNOQUA (found in https://innoqua-project.eu/.) and now am working in the project LIFE BIODAPH2O with the aim to upscale the NbS treatment of INNOQUA for treating wastewater.
