The Girona Normal School for Teachers was created in 1844 to provide teacher training courses for men. Courses for women did not begin until 1914.
From then until now it has enjoyed a variety of different locations, course plans and levels of autonomy.
Between 1844 and 1972, except for the period from 1901 to 1914 when they came under the umbrella of the Girona Institute, the teacher training courses were completely independent.
In 1971 the Girona Normal School began its life as a university when it became part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
In 1985 the Estudi General de Girona was created. This grouped together the Girona university centres which were part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
In December 1991 the University of Girona was created. The Teacher Training courses – along with those of Social Education, Education Science and Psychology – then became part of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. A little later, in 1999, Education Psychology courses were added.
Throughout our history our courses have been given in many different places: at the old institute (carrer de la Força), at the Pujada de la Catedral, at carrer de la Barca, at the plaça Lledoners, at carrer de la Força, at carrer Bellmirall, at the Gran Via de Jaume I and at Anselm Clavé (Rafael Masó i Valentí's Athenea building, home of the Normal School from 1917 to 1965) and at today's building in Emili Grahit, the first time we have had our own building. The faculty's board and the UdG's governing board agreed in 1994 that the future base of our faculty would be the renovated small seminary building in the old town.
