University of Ljubljana (UL), situated in the capital of Slovenia, was founded in 1919. The whole university has more than 56,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students, making it one of the biggest universities in the world with continuous growth of international students enrolling in its courses.
Tourism studies are run at the Faculty of Economics (FELU), established in 1946. Nowadays, it is the largest faculty of the UL with almost 10,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students occupying the modern campus close to the city center.
The Faculty of Economics has important links to the corporate world and a high commitment to research, teaching quality standards and market orientation. The FELU, together with its degree and postgraduate programs in business and economics, is the pioneer of tourism higher education in Slovenia and one of the faculty aims is to rank among the best business and economic schools in the world by 2020 focusing on its core values: excellence, international orientation, client focus, and openness to collaboration, innovation, ethics and social responsibility including environmental awareness.
- Awards & Important Achievements
The FELU has been awarded accreditation by both the AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and EQUIS (the European Quality Improvement System), making it among 88 business schools in the world to hold both of them. The prestigious AACSB accreditation has been awarded to only 65 business schools in Europe, the FELU being the first school in Central and Eastern Europe. This establishes the faculty among the world’s best business schools with the highest academic quality.
In addition, tourism programs have received a TEDQUAL quality certificate, awarded by the UN WTO and THEMIS Foundation for quality tourism education (since 2002). International accreditations confirm excellence in all activities and thus ensure high quality of graduate programs at the FELU.
As for international co-operation, the Faculty of Economics is an active participant in international research projects and is running several joint higher education programs in the fields of tourism, business and environmental management.

International Travel and Hospitality Academy at Sea (ITHAS) is an educational program with international participation. EMTM students participate in ITHAS (usually organized in early May) during their second semester at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.
Participants attend lectures given by tourism professionals from around the globe while sailing along the beautiful Adriatic coast for approximately one week. Each year, courses are focused on a different issue from the tourism industry such as “Physical Coastal Planning in Tourism” (2011) and “Creation of Tourism Product” (2012).
ITHAS is organized by the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Economics and Business) in collaboration with other partners from Germany, Finland, Canada, and Slovenia. For more information, please, visit the official ITHAS web site: http://ithas.org/index.html.
