Assessment and Grading

Assessment activities:

Description of the activity Assessment Activity % Remediable subject
Examples and study cases in the aula. Short reports of the calculations and results. 10 No
Individual exercises at home. Short reports of the calculations and results, quizes. 40 No
Individual exam. Assessment of the solution in comparison with the hand calculations of machine design, accuracy of the solution and report presentation. 50 No

Grading

The “Examples and Study Cases in the Aula” (AU) are activities done during the course sessions. The student is invited to submit them as a proof of his/her involvement and as a stimulus to raise questions or to ask for help in case of problems with the software. They will get a pass/no pass grading considering only if they have been submitted and correctly discussed during the sessions.

The “Individual Exercises at Home” are exercises similar to examples discussed in the classroom. Each student must submit them individually. However, they are common to all the students and they can collaborate is solving them. Their number can vary depending on the extent of the examples discussed in the course. They will be graded and given a weighted grade (EX).

The ”Individual Exam” (IE) consists of some exercises that are more extended than the ones suggested in the classroom and can combine different aspects. Each student will have a personalized version of the exercises and he/she must solve them individually, partially in the classroom and at home. The report to be delivered should be thoroughly documented, including: hypothesis, data collection, strategy to solve the problem, results of hand-made calculations and computer simulations, analysis of the results and personal conclusions.

The final grade will be:
FG = 0,1*AU + 0,40*EX + 0,50*IE

Cheating in the submissions is subjected to the procedure established by law and the regulations of the School.

Specific criteria for the "No show" grade:
Those students who do not deliver any of the reports will be graded as "No presentat" (NP), which is understood as having abandoned the course.

Single Assessment:
If the student prefers to deliver just the detailed analysis of an element at the end of the course, he/she will be graded according only to this deliverable.

Minimum requirements to pass:
A grade of 5 over 10 is required to pass the course. This grade will be the result of a weighting of the activities during the course as prescribed in the grading description.

All reports must be delivered on due time and sufficiently developed so that the ability of the student can be assessed.

Mentorship

The student can ask via email or Moodle Messages for a tutorial appointment.

Communication and interaction with students

Communication with students will be via e-mail, Moodle Messages or Moodle News forum of the course.

Remarks

The student should have a basic knowledge of the principles of mechanics, stress and strain calculation, as well as understanding of common machine elements.

It is expected that the student will be following (or had followed in a previous academic year) these courses of the MMMS:
- The finite element method in structural mechanics
- Pre and post-process tools for structural finite element analyses
- Solid mechanics

Recommended subjects

  • Eines de pre i post-proces per anàlisis estructurals per elements finits
  • El mètode dels elements finits en la mecànica d'estructures
  • Mecànica de sòlids

Design Amendment

Amendment of activities:
No modification of the teaching activities is foreseen, as they can be adapted to on-line modality if needed.

Amendment of the assessment:
The teaching and grading can be readily adapted to on-line mode, using the resources of the UdG.

Mentoring and communication:
Appointments for tutorial sessions can be requested by email.
Communication is through email or Moodle messaging.
