Participation in the 10th international conference on Interfaces Against Pollution 2018

Jordi Colomer and Teresa Serra attend the 10th international conference on Interfaces Against Pollution (IAP) 2018 in La Grande Motte, France, from 10 to 13 June 2018. The members of the Environmental Physics research group contribute with two oral presentations to expound results of the INNOQUA European research project.

Jordi Colomer and Teresa Serra participate in the 10th international conference on Interfaces Against Pollution (IAP) 2018 Meeting in La Grande Motte, France, during June 10-13, 2018. This event is organized by the members of the Charles Gerhardt Institute of Montpellier and the Marcoule Institute for Separation Chemistry.

Jerzy Zajac and Jean-François Dufrêche, Chair and Co-Chair of the conference, respectively, explain that the rapidly growing global population together with the general expectation for further improvement of life standards in different parts of the world generate an unending spiral of increasing consumption of food and energy and thus have an enormous impact on the ecosystems. Over the past few decades, there has emerged the overwhelming conviction that the concept of sustainable development needs the integration of environmental concerns and issues into the fields of international politics and economy. Zajac and Dufrêche point out that global environmental decline has not been reversed yet, despite a great number of conferences, treaties, directives, action plans, and other instruments proposed at the political level for environment protection. On the other side, the research and technical community continues to provide valuable solutions to environmental protection based mostly on an interdisciplinary approach, as well as scientific support necessary to guide the path of sustainable development in the word. the IAP conferences series fall under this heading.

Within this context, Jordi Colomer and Teresa Serra contribute to the IAP 2018 with two oral presentations in collaboration with other researchers of the LEQUIA research group and of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Girona.

On one hand, Teresa Serra gives a talk entitled “Daphnia magna filtration efficiency and mobility in sheared flows”. In this study, Teresa Serra, Aina Barcelona and Jordi Colomer, members of the Environmental Physics research group, designed a total of 72 experiments to determine the favorable hydrodynamic flow environment for D. magna performance. In a laminar-dominated flow regime, D. magna filtration was enhanced up to 2.6 times that of a steady flow. In contrast, in the turbulent-dominated flow regime D. magna filtration was inhibited. In the laminar flow regime D. magna moved freely in all directions, whereas in the turbulent flow regime D. magna were driven by the streamlines of the flow. A model based on Daphnia-particle encountering revealed that the filtration efficiency in the laminar regime was driven by the length of the D. magna and the shear rate imposed by the system. The study concludes that all the hydrodynamics have to be considered in the design of an environmental-friendly wastewater treatment system based on D. magna filtration, which might be potentially used as a tertiary treatment.

On the other hand, Jordi Colomer and Teresa Serra also contribute to the oral presentation entitled “Assessment of zooplankton for domestic wastewater treatment”. This study concludes that D. magna, in combination with other natural treatments, such as bacterial/algal biofilm, is an interesting alternative to conventional treatments due to its economical operation and installation costs, easy-operation and sustainability, and could provide a solution for wastewater treatment in low income and isolated communities, even permitting water reuse if operated correctly.

These studies were conducted in the framework of the wastewater treatment and reuse research line, and of the INNOQUA project from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (ARES 2016).
