Talking about monkeys, behaviour and conservation on El Faro (Cadena SER) The Comparative Minds Research Group has taken part in the radio programme El Faro, broadcast by Cadena SER and presented by journalist Mara Torres, one of the most influential voices in science and cultural communication in Spain. Dr. Miquel Llorente was invited to participate in an in-depth interview within an episode dedicated to the word “mono” (“monkey”). 13 de gener 2026 Recerca i transferència Societat Compromís social
During the interview, Dr. Llorente reflected on the personal and scientific motivations that led him to study primates, discussing who non-human primates are from a biological, cognitive and evolutionary perspective, and why they are a key taxonomic group for understanding the origins of human cognition and social behaviour. The conversation also addressed the current conservation status of primates worldwide, highlighting major threats such as habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade and certain forms of poorly managed ecotourism. In this context, Dr. Llorente emphasised the importance of ethical, evidence-based approaches to wildlife tourism that prioritise animal welfare and long-term conservation. A central part of the discussion focused on the use of primates as pets (mascotism). Drawing on research lines developed within the Comparative Minds Research Group, Dr. Llorente explained how early separation from conspecifics, social deprivation and chronic stress have severe consequences for primates’ mental health, emotional development and overall wellbeing, often resulting in long-lasting behavioural and cognitive impairments. By bringing scientific research into a widely listened public radio programme, this contribution reflects the group’s commitment to knowledge transfer, public engagement and the societal impact of research, fostering a more informed understanding of non-human primates and our ethical responsibilities towards them. 🔗 Click to Listen to the full interview on El Faro - Cadena SER (in Spanish)
