The class consists of informal lectures combined with class discussions. The purpose of the informal lectures is to present a critical discussion and assessment of the main concepts of the course.
The teaching strategy is to present the concepts of tourism as a system, tourism clusters, and tourism value chain analysis. Students will work on two assignments: one assignment on tourism clusters where they will apply the theories discussed in the lectures and will collect data during their field trip; and a second on value chain analysis, which is a team exercise on a simulated case study. The purpose of these assignments is to allow the students to extend their understanding of and ability to apply the concepts, tools, and theories taught in the lectures in the real-life settings, and to contribute to the student development in terms of disciplinary knowledge, analytic and critical thinking, independent and reflective learning, and information literacy, collaborative work, and effective communication.
Students must also expect to work effectively in teams and to prepare formal written assignments in a clear and logical manner. Thus, this course aims not only to develop the student’s understanding and knowledge of a range of important partnerships and networks in tourism but also to encourage the student to present their analyses and actions in a logical and convincing manner and to clearly show how their conclusions are based on evidence acquired through research.
