1. This course explores how a space becomes a place through multiple movements and relations.
The sharing economy will frame inquiries into digital nomads, international students and AirBnB. Special interest tourism, namely cycling tourism will be addressed.
Critical attention will be paid to those less mobile to address how inaccessibility, e.g., physical immobility, ageing, contributes to place making, experiential conditions, and how reimaginations can be leveraged. The context of exploration is Girona.
Students will critically question who and what are recognised as local and global visitors. Visitation and visitor economies are explored through the lens of the more-than-human others (biodiversity, migratory birds, UNESCO protected areas, e.g. dark skies).
This lays the ground for inquiries into multi-level governance, multi-species mobilities and the Commons to understand what kind of territory is being created, and for whom.
The second part of the course will include examples of globalized place-making and identification of possible futures.
AI Use
The use of generative AI tools is permitted in this course as a support resource (e.g., for brainstorming, information gathering, outlining, or language revision). However, AI tools must not replace students’ own critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, or original contributions.
Any use of AI must be explicitly acknowledged, indicating the tool used and how it contributed to the work. Students remain fully responsible for the accuracy, quality, and integrity of all submitted content.
Assessment will focus on students’ collaborative abilities, critical arguments, integration of sources, and demonstration of independent reflection and reflexion.
Where teaching staff has doubts about authorship, the student may be called to an in-person/synchronous interview to verify knowledge. If authorship cannot be confirmed the result will be failing grade.
