Doctor for the “Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona” (1986) under the supervision of Dr. Josep Maria Alcañiz, carried out a large part of the doctoral thesis (1983-1986) in the Section of Soil Biology of the “Istituto per lo Studio e la Difesa del Suolo” of “Ministero di Agricultura” (ISSDS) in Florence, Italiy, under the supervision of Dr. Pier Giacomo Arcara.
The research work focused on the study of different types of organic matter on soil biological activity, with special emphasis to the organic carbon and nitrogen and soil microorganisms in charge. During the development of the doctoral thesis she also collaborated (1983-1984) with Dr. Brunello Ceccanti of the “Istituto per la Chimica del Terreno” of the “Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche” in Pisa (Italy), working in the fractionating and purifying of soil organic matter by using ultrafiltration and isoelectrofocusing, and in the determination of soil enzymatic activities. In the years 1986-1987 she was awarded with a post-doctoral grant spent in in the Section of Soil Biology of the ISSDS in Florence, Italy. In 1988 obtained a grant/contract from the “Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia” for the re-incorporation in Spain of doctors and technologists, in the “Escuela Universitaria Politécnica de Girona (Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña)”, currently “Escuela Politécnica Superior de la Universitat de Girona”. The research activity in the period 1988-1990, was focused to establish a possible relationship between the susceptibility of fruit trees to certain diseases and the plant nutritional state and soil characteristics. In 1990 obtained a research project (IP for Spain) financed by the European Union entitled “Denitrification and N-emission from different European cultivation systems and soil types”, (Science and Technology for Environmental Protection) (STEP CT90-0029) which allowed her to continue with the research activity related with the topics of her doctoral thesis.
In 1991 obtained a post of professor “Titular de Escuela Universitaria” of the area of Crop Production and in 1993 obtained the post of professor “Titular de Universidad” to which currently belongs in the “Escuela Politécnica Superior de la Universitat de Girona”. During the period 1996-1999 was in charge as Vicerector of Research, International Relations and Technology Transfer in the first elected rectoral mandate of the “Universitat de Girona”. After this period of University management and a research stay (2000) in the Faculty of Agriculture of Ghent University (Belgium) with Dr. Oswald Van Clemmput, she founded the research group “Soil Science Unit” in the University of Girona, devoted to the study of the soil system from an agricultural and environmental point of view.
Nowadays, she belongs to the research group “Soil and Vegetation in the Mediterranean Region” emerging Group in research activity (SGR14-1605) by the Government of the “Generalitat de Catalunya” which leads together with Dr. Dolors Verdaguer. The current research activity focuses on establishing the effects of land use, land use and cover change including land abandonment on parameters related to the soil physical, chemical and biological quality.
She has participated in several national and international funded research projects (17) obtained through competitive criteria. As author published more than 50 articles of which 34 are in index journals (JRC).
