M.D. Balaguer is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Girona (Catalonia, Spain). She is the director of the research group LEQUIA (Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Technology) recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a quality research group (2017 SGR 1552) and belongs to the TECNIO Net of ACC10 (Generalitat de Catalunya) (the finality of this entity is to give support to the Catalan companies) since 2003. Her research has been focused on innovative technologies for the treatment of urban and industrial wastewater, mainly for nutrient removal. From 15 years ago, a new line of research has developed, based on the application of Bioelectrochemical Systems (BES) to obtain valuable products from CO2-gas emissions and remove nutrients from water. She has published more than 120 scientific papers in SCI journals with an h-index of 45 (Scopus) with more than 5500 total citations. She has participated in more than 100 national and international research projects and RD contracts, and has supervised 16 doctoral theses. Research of these years has conducted to develop three European patents on microbial electrochemical technologies. Related to her teaching activity (degrees of Biotechnology and Environmental Science), it has been certified by Quality Assurance Agency for the University System in Catalonia (Spain).
