Universitat de Girona Conducts Field Research at La Pletera for PlastikHum Project Researchers from the Universitat de Girona conducted a field campaign at La Pletera, collecting data and sediment samples to study microplastic pollution. This work, part of the PlastikHum project, aims to understand and reduce microplastic impacts on Mediterranean coastal ecosystems. 01 de març 2024 Recerca i transferència
The Environmental Physics Research Group from the Universitat de Girona (UdG) recently embarked on a vital field campaign at La Pletera, part of the Montgrí, Medes Islands, and Baix Ter Natural Park. This initiative aimed to gather experimental data and sediment samples to analyze microplastic concentrations in the region. The site, known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance, provided a critical setting for studying the impacts of microplastics on coastal ecosystems.During the campaign, the team meticulously collected samples from various points within La Platera, employing advanced techniques to quantify the prevalence of microplastics in the area. The data acquired will contribute significantly to the PlastikHum project, which seeks to understand and mitigate the effects of microplastics in Mediterranean coastal and transitional waters. The insights gained from this research are expected to inform strategies to reduce microplastic pollution, thereby protecting marine life and maintaining the ecological balance of the region. Through their rigorous fieldwork and subsequent analyses, the UdG researchers continue to lead efforts in tackling one of the pressing environmental issues of our time.
