Description:
- This subject provides foundational knowledge on integral patient-centered care, by providing students with a general background on sound and safe health care assistance. The course begins by providing insight on patient’s rights and interpersonal communication skills. We will then learn about vital signs, emergency first response and tissue healing, both within contexts of disease as well as trauma. We will focus on balance and falls prevention, personal protection, hygiene and ergonomics. Practical skills will be acquired through workshops on bandaging, transferring of non-autonomous patients, and basic life support techniques.

Grading
In order to pass the subject, students following a continuous assessment will be requested to fullfill the following requirements:
1) Deliverable tasks. Students will be required to work in groups or individually in order to integrate the theoretical knowledge acquired from the lectures. All deliverable tasks account for 30% of the final mark. Failing to comply with the format/delivery requirements will result in zero.
2) Practical exam: two techniques will be performed in pairs. The practical exam will account for 40% of the total mark. A minimum mark of 5/10 is required to pass. Students failing to achieve the minimum will be requested to sit the practical component of the BCE.
3) Theory exam: multiple choice questions (MCQ). It will account as 30% of the total mark. A penalty will be applied for incorrect answers. Nothing is deducted from unanswered questions. A minimum mark of 5/10 is required to pass. Students failing to achieve the minimum will be requested to sit the theoretical component of the BCE.
4) Participation in class can be discretionally used by teacher as part of the assessment.
A minimum attendance of 80% to practical workshops is mandatory. Failing to comply with attendance requirements will result in sitting the practical component of the BCE.
The BCE will be marked as Pass / No pass. Therefore, students who pass the BCE will have a maximum final subject qualification of 5.
Specific criteria for the "No show" grade:
Students failing to sit an exam will be marked with zero for the missed exam.
Single Assessment:
Students opting to take the non-continuous assessment must notify their decision to the lecturer within the first two weeks of the course.
For students who opt for the non-continuous assessment, they will be required to take both the practical exam and the theory exam on the same day, during the official exam week.
The practical component is worth 55% and will consist of demonstrating 2 practical techniques from the workshops. A minimum mark of 5/10 is necessary to pass the subject. In case of scoring less than 5/10, the student will be required to sit the BCE for the practical component.
The theory component is worth 45% and will consist of MCQ regarding theoretical concepts acquired throughout the course. A minimum mark of 5/10 is necessary to pass the subject. In case of scoring less than 5/10, the student will be required to sit the BCE for the theory component.
The BCE will be marked as Pass / No pass. Therefore, students who pass the BCE will have a maximum final subject qualification of 5.
