17. BLOCK 3: SELF-LEARNING WORK The teacher will ask students to do a number of self-learning activities from the program called Tell me More ® from the Rosetta Stone Company. At the onset of the 2nd term, the teacher will establish the number of hours students will have to dedicate to activities from this programme. Tell me More® will evaluate the work done and will generate a final report according to the work load done in terms of hours spent on the various activities. Doing the amount of work requested will grant the student a percentage of the final grade.

Avaluació i qualificació

Self-study work The teacher will ask students to do a number of activities from a multi-media program in the 2nd semester. The allocated grade percentage will be gained if the student proves to have done the demanded work by the established deadline. 10
Writing tests 4 writing tasks done in class as tests. These tasks will require students to write a document related to something covered in that lesson. In their writings, students will be asked to use a number of grammatical structures and some lexical items (also covered in that lesson). 20
Oral exams There will be 2 oral exams: one for each semester. Each oral exam will require students to show their ability to produce spontaneous language based on the activities covered in Block 2, Communication and culture. Minimum grade: 5 30
Competence exams Two competence exams based on block 1 (English for Tourism and FCE)and sat in the examination period at the end of each semester. This exam will cover FCE materials done in class, FCE exercises taken from official examinations (not covered in class) and vocabulary and theoretical questions related to English for tourism. Minimum grade: 5 40


The assessment criteria listed above are for those student who choose formative assessment. These learners will have to take into account the following considerations:

1)At re-sits, students will only recover the exams they have failed, i.e., those who have passed the competence exam but failed the oral will only have to re-sit the oral exam, and vice versa.
2)If a student fails the oral exam of the first semester, passing the oral exam of the 2nd semester will be enough to recover that mark, but the mark of the first semester will be maintained when it comes to establishing the student’s final mark.
3)Students who do not show up for the writing tests will have to do these writing tasks on the day of the corresponding competence exam. No tasks will be accepted from home.
4) If a student fails a writing test, or scores a low mark in it, this mark will remain. There are no alternative tests to catch up or raise that low grade. What students are advised to do in that case is to aim at getting a higher mark in the next writing test in order to improve the mean grade.
5) Students will have a deadline to show the teacher they have done the number of self-learning work required. After that date, students will have no chances of gaining the percentage of points allocated to that activity.
6)The fact of not doing these self-learning tasks will just affect the final mark. In no way will a student fail for the fact of not having done this part. However, the final grade must be a 5. This means students have to be aware that if this part of the course is not done, the rest of examinations and activities must be passed with high marks to ensure the resulting grade is enough to reach a 5.

Students who choose summative assessment must fill in a form stating their decision and submit it to the academic secretary by 30th October. The percentages in their case work like this: 50% for a comprehensive written exam + 30% for an oral exam + 20% of self-learning work.

There will be three groups for English lessons with the aim to reinforce interaction between teacher and students and promote conversation and oral practice in class.
The level in the first year of the Degree in Tourism is at times B2.1 or B2.2, according to the General European Framework of Languages. The expected level by the end of the degree is a solid B2, enough to make them pass the First Certificate Examination.
