Competences

Syllabus

1. Measuring and quantification in Ecology. Studies in ecosystems, working scale, sampling design, experimental design, field sampling design. Examples.

2. Examples of studies in Ecology. Experimental work in the laboratory, design, defining objectives and hypothesis, development, monitoring, analysis, data collection, data treatment, discussion of results and writing. A specific experiment related to aquatic ecosystems will be performed investigating different anthropic impacts on its functioning.

3. Examples of studies in Ecology. Example of a field work: sampling design, defining objectives and hypothesis, field sampling, data analysis, application of a model, discussion of the data, comparison between different research approaches. Practical analysis of organic matter decomposition experiments and application of decomposing models in different conditions.

Assessment and Grading

Assessment activities:

Description of the activity Assessment Activity % Remediable subject
Laboratory and field work Evaluation of attendance, interest, and participation in the practicum work 5 No
Writing of a scientific text Correct writing, capacity of synthesis and analysis, capacity to communicate writing science. 30 Yes
Scientific communication Clarity in the explanation, scientific accuracy, contents. 15 No
Evaluation of content and learned skills Comprehension of the contents of theoretical sessions, comprehension of case studies and design, results and discussion of the field and laboratory work.
50 Yes

Grading

The final mark of the subject will be calculated as follows:

50% exam
30% scientific writing
15% scientific communication
5% attendance and participation in the practicum

It is compulsory to do all evaluation activities. To pass the subject it is necessary to pass the exam and the scientific writing.

Attendance at the practicum sessions is compulsory. To pass the subject, you must have participated in a percentage greater than 80% of the scheduled hours. Non-attendance (up to 20%) will result in a penalty in the final mark.

Specific criteria for the "No show" grade:
The qualification of NP ("no presentat", not attending) will be acquired when none of the activities is done.

Single Assessment:
Students that exceptionally follow the single evaluation (after required to the academic secretary), will have to do a single exam that will include concepts and learnings from all theoretical and practical lessons.

Minimum requirements to pass:
The minimum mark to pass the subject is 5.0.

Mentorship

Tutoring will be agreed by e-mail or in class

Communication and interaction with students

The main comunication, a part from class, will be by the moodle and by the e-mail.
