Miquel Solà (1964) obtained his PhD at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1991 with academic honours. His doctoral research under the supervision of Profs. Joan Bertran and Agustí Lledós was awarded with the Doctoral Extraordinary Award and the Catalan Saint Albert Prize. After several months in a consultant private company, in 1993 he moved to the University of Girona (UdG) as assistant researcher. In 1994 he did postdoctoral research in Amsterdam with Evert Jan Baerends and in 1995 in Calgary with Tom Ziegler. He was appointed assistant professor of the UdG in 1997 and full professor in 2003. In the UdG, he has served as director of the Institute of Computational Chemistry (2004-07), director of the department of Chemistry (2007-10), and director of the School of doctoral studies (2010-14 i 2018-22). In 2001, he was awarded with the Catalan Distinction for the Promotion of University Research (young scientist category). Since 2003, he holds a permanent position as full professor in the UdG. He is coauthor of about 450 papers, 40 book chapters, and one book, which have received more than 17000 citations. He has an index h of 67 and he has supervised 22 doctoral Theses, five of which have received a Doctoral Extraordinary Award of the UdG. He has been awarded two times with the ICREA Academia Prize (2009 and 2014). In 2013 he received the Physical Chemistry RSEQ 2013 prize, awarded by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2019, he received the recognition of Honorary member of the Polish Chemical Society “in appreciation of his brilliant achievements and outstanding support for Polish chemistry and Polish Chemical Society”. He is member of the Editorial Board of the journals Scientific Reports, Theoretical Chemistry Accounts, ACS Omega, Frontiers in Chemistry, and Anales de Química.
Research interests
His research interests have been mainly focused on theoretical studies of organic and organometallic reaction mechanisms with special emphasis on fullerenes and their reactivity, on the use of quantum molecular similarity measures, the development conceptual density functional theory, and the analysis of electron delocalization and aromaticity.
