Brief CV:

Doctor in Chemical Sciences from the Ramon Llull University (1995). Since 1995 I joined the Biochemistry group of the University of Girona (UdG), combining teaching, and research activity in glycoproteins, under the supervision of Dr. R. de Llorens. In this area, I performed postdoctoral stays at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (1997), in the laboratory of Dr. M. Frazier, specialist in gastrointestinal cancers, and later at the University of Oxford (2001 and 2002) in the laboratory of Dr. R. Dwek and Dr. P. Rudd (currently at NIBRT, Dublin), where I specialized in Glycobiology.

Since 2003, I am professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UdG, where I co-direct the research group "Biochemistry of Cancer" and I am also the coordinator of the research group SGR Clinic and Biochemistry of Cancer (ref 2021 SGR 00562) recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which integrates the basic researchers of our group at the UdG and clinicians of the Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta.

Since I got my position at UdG, I have increased my docent task, lecturing a higher number of theoretical subjects as well as lecturing in master and doctorate courses. I have also had several academic management positions; to highlight as a academic secretary of the Biology Dept. from July-2004 to Nov.-2007, and as a coordinator of the Biology degree from Sept.-2009 to Dec-2012.

My research focuses on the area of glycobiology and cancer, where, from 2004 to the present, I have participated as a researcher or responsible researcher in 33 projects, have led as principal investigator (IP) in six competitive R&D projects (five financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and one by the La Marató Foundation of TV3; all three years long), in relation to the search for new tumor markers associated with altered glycosylation of proteins and in relation to the role of sialyltransferases in the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells.

The scientific experience of the research group has generated seven R&D contracts with Companies (national and international), in which I have participated as a researcher (in three of them) and in the other four, I have been the principal investigator (IP).

All this has allowed the generation of five patents and more than 49 scientific articles in international journals, some with more than 200 citations, and four book chapters. Of the 49 articles published, 41 from the first quartile (JCR or SJR) and 34 articles as first or last/corresponding author, with an H index=29.

I have directed ten Doctoral Theses, seven of them with European Mention, and three Doctoral Theses more in progress; and numerous works of DEA, Master and TFG. I have also participated in dissemination of the research to society through participation in conferences aimed at the general public and in scientific campaigns addressed to secondary school students.

I have also lectured at national and international symposia, and our group is part of the European network of the EuroGlycoscience Forum and the INNOGLY- COST Action, and member of ALIPANC organization.

My research activity has been recognised in four research sexennial periods (1992-2000, 2001-07, 2008-13 and 2014-19) and one sexennial period of knowledge transfer and innovation (2010-2018), and since October 1, 2019, I am accredited as Full Professor by ANECA.

Our research group actively collaborates with different national and international groups of recognized prestige. To highlight the group of Drs. R. Saldova/P Rudd from the NIBRT (Dublin), experts in glycobiology, who have been participating in our funded projects, the group of Dr. K. Konstantopoulos of Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, expert in the processes of adhesion and tumor cell migration. The study of altered glycosylation in prostate cancer has also led to collaborations with Dr. P. Mendes of the University of Birmingham, participating in a project of the UK Prostate Cancer Foundation, and with Dr. J. Munkley of the University of Newcastle. At the national level, to highlight the collaborations with Dr. P. Navarro from IMIM (Barcelona), with Drs. E. Giménez and MV. Sanz-Nebot from the Univ. of Barcelona, with Dr. O. Pozo, from IMIM, and Dr. PE.Guerrero/JM Garcia-Aznar from Univ. of Zaragoza, among others. Recently, collaborations with Dr. A. González group from the Univ. of Vigo and with Dr. A Palazón from the CICbioGUNE (Spain) have been established.

The investigations performed over these years have a marked translational component, and therefore we collaborate closely with the clinicians of the Dr. J. Trueta Hospital in Girona, who have been participating in the different research projects in the definition of clinical problem and patient selection. All this has allowed us to advance in the knowledge of glycan alterations associated with tumors and has opened new strategies to find biomarkers to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of pancreatic and prostate cancer.
