Dani Boix és professor agregat del Departament de Ciències Ambientals i investigador sènior de l'Institut d'Ecologia Aquàtica de la Universitat de Girona. La seva recerca es centra en l'ecologia de les comunitats aquàtiques, principalment en sistemes lenítics i concretament a les basses temporànies mediterrànies. Aquesta recerca analitza principalment l’efecte dels factors biòtics i abiòtics sobre la composició de les espècies i l'estructura de la comunitat d’aquests ecosistemes. En aquests ambients, la variació en la durada de l'hidroperíode (important degut a la imprevisibilitat associada al clima mediterrani) implica canvis en els factors abiòtics que, al seu torn, suposen canvis en la comunitat. La dinàmica de les xarxes tròfiques d'aigües somes és un altre dels temes de la seva recerca. També s'interessa per conèixer i mesurar la biodiversitat i els factors locals, regionals i globals que la determinen. Està implicat en alguns projectes aplicats que pretenen crear i/o restaurar aiguamolls i estanys mediterranis. L'objectiu d'aquests projectes és recuperar ecosistemes aquàtics en zones on han desaparegut per tal de millorar les poblacions d'espècies aquàtiques, principalment les amenaçades com els amfibis o els rèptils aquàtics.
