Marc Llavanera Bruguera holds a degree in Biology (2018), a master''''s in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine (2019; Extraordinary Master''''s Award), a master''''s in Nutrition and Health (2024) and a PhD in Biotechnology of Reproduction (2023; cum laude, international mention and Extraordinary Award) from the University of Girona (UdG).
In January 2019, he joined the UdG with a competitive Transfer and Innovation grant (BTI) at the TechnoSperm group (TECNIO), attached to the Department of Biology. In September 2019, he obtained an FPU contract (MCIU) with which he developed his doctoral thesis. He then completed a two-year postdoctoral stay at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (Germany), in the Chromosome Biology group (October 2023–September 2025), and since November 2025 he has been a Juan de la Cierva researcher (ranked first in his area in the 2024 call) at the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), while maintaining collaborations with the UdG.
His research focuses on sperm physiology in livestock and human species, with special emphasis on the discovery of biomarkers, metabolism, cryopreservation and the molecular regulation of meiosis and chromatin. During his PhD, he led a project on fertility biomarkers and developed studies on porcine sperm metabolomics, as well as work on chromatin integrity and embryonic development.
He completed research stays at the University of Bologna (Italy) and at the University of Aveiro (Portugal), funded by the Ministry of Universities. This international experience has significantly enriched his training in cutting-edge research.
He is the author of 40 publications in SCI/JCR indexed journals, with more than 720 citations and an h-index of 17 (Google Scholar). He has presented papers at national and international conferences, and has participated in competitive projects and collaborations with companies in the livestock and health sectors. He also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals.
In the teaching field, he has taught at the UdG and at international universities, and has supervised final degree projects, master''''s theses and doctoral theses. He actively participates in scientific dissemination activities, contributing to the communication of research to society.
