Brief CV

I studied Chemistry at the University of Girona (Catalonia, Spain, 1992 - 1996). Then I started my doctoral studies at the Department of Chemistry of the UdG on bioinorganic and organometallic redox chemistry of copper (Professor A. Llobet as supervisor) and obtained my doctorate in December 2001 with the highest qualification of excellent cum laude. During my doctoral studies, I carried out two research stays in highly recognized research groups at the Univ. Basel with Professor Zuberbühler and at Stanford University with Professor D. Stack (November 2000-February 2001).

I did my postdoctoral studies (3 years) at the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (CSIC-Spain) under the supervision of professors J. Veciana and C. Rovira (January 2002 – December 2004). My postdoctoral work in Veciana's group was particularly notable for the publication of high-quality works in the field of molecular materials with physical properties (16 publications).

I returned to the UdG in 2005 with a Juan de la Cierva contract and became an independent group leader in November 2006, founding the QBIS-CAT research group together with Dr. Michael Costas My research in recent years has focused on three main projects; a) Fundamental mechanistic studies on organometallic redox chemistry in processes of cross-coupling and CH activation and functionalization of arenes by means of transition metals, b) Study of the structural and functional modeling of Fe, Mn and Cu oxygenases non-heme and their application as selective oxidation catalysts, c) Self-assembly of nanocapsules based on metal-directed coordination for catalytic transformations and reactivity in confined state.

I have been awarded an ICREA-Academia award in 2010 and an ERC-Starting Grant in 2011 (ERC-2011-StG-277801, until November 2017), the latter on C-X and C-H functionalization involving Cu(III) species . In addition, I obtained three consecutive grants from MINECO (CTQ2013-43012-P, CTQ2016-77989-P, PID2019-104498GB-I00). I was awarded a second ICREA-Academia award in 2015 and an ERC-Proof of Concept grant in 2015 (ERC-PoC-2015-709590). I also lead the Catalan project (2017 SGR 264) and the Univ. Girona MCPUdG2016 and GdRCompetUdG2017 research projects. In 2018 I was awarded the RSEQ Research Excellence Award 2018. In January 2020 I won the third ICREA-Academia 2020 award.
My work has been published in 150 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals (H index = 54, citations 8800 as of 01 April 2024). In addition, I have published 9 book chapters, filled 5 Spanish patents and edited the book entitled "C-H and C-X functionalization. Transition metal mediation", published by RSC-Publishing in 2013. I have communicated my work in more than 180 conferences international and I have given more than 60 lectures in international conferences and universities.I have supervised 20 PhD theses and I am currently supervising 7 in progress. I am also a founding member of the Spin-Off of the UdG, GIOXCAT SL.
