Motivation and syllabus

Motivation

Catalysis is the key to an extensive spectre of chemical processes, from the laboratory of research to the large-scale industrial reactor, and even the essence of the life. It is estimated that 90% of all chemical products manufactured involve catalysts at some stage of the production process. Furthermore, computational chemistry has evolved in recent decades thanks to the spectacular increase in computers’ power of calculate, taking on a crucial role as an ally of experimental laboratory chemistry. In recent years, many industries, especially pharmaceuticals, have discovered the potential of molecular moulding, and have recruited computational chemists into their research teams as a result.

The IQCC is thus committed to transferring the most recent research in sustainable catalysis to the future chemical investigators of our country; and of educating professionals for an industry that increasingly needs chemists specialised in sustainable catalysis. This challenge must enable students, once the course finished, to be able to carry out the synthesis of new catalysts and the development of better, more efficient and sustainable catalytic processes, which become a differential and strategic factor for many companies looking to innovate their production processes and/or aspiring to create new more sustainable, economic and environmentally-respectful products.

Syllabus:

Future students are mainly holders of a undergraduate degree in chemistry, but the master is also open to graduates in biotechnology, chemical engineering and materials science, who wish to pursue a career in research, innovation and development, either in industry or at university, through accessing doctoral studies. The course will provide students with the skills required to approach and design the new synthesis of products based on catalysed processes by transition metals, to integrate more innovative synthetic routes and to direct students towards more sustainable, efficient and economic catalytic methodologies. This master also gives the students the opportunity to strive for a more theoretical or computational approach to the subject area.
