Instructions for presenting doctoral theses as a compendium of publications

Agreement from the Thesis-Defence Authorisation Committee, at its meeting of 16 December 2009

Repealed for Format criteria for the doctoral thesis at the University of Girona and submission of theses in electronic format

Research results are regularly published, at least in certain fields of knowledge, during the preparation of doctoral theses, so that, while they constitute original work, they are not always completely new to the public.

Under Article 24.1 of the University of Girona's Academic Regulations for doctoral studies the CADTD is empowered to agree to or reject authorisation for the defence of the doctoral theses, so it may approve “instructions” that are basically aimed at ensuring the quality of theses as a compendium of publications. Article 17.3 itself of these regulations stipulates that the CADTD shall establish and publish certain quality criteria, under which works that have been published or accepted in publications with a significant impact index will be taken into account.

These instructions contemplate the possibility of presenting doctoral theses as a compendium of publications, which are linked to one another, provided they are of proven quality.

Theses submitted in this way must fulfil the following conditions:

  1. The thesis will include a minimum of three works that present a thematic unity (in the line of research), whose main author is the doctorate student.
  2. Where the works are articles, two at least need to be published or accepted in magazines indexed in international data bases, and with an impact index in the first half of the thematic area or similar; or alternatively with the contribution of quality indices that will be assessed according to its thematic area. The third article shall be at the revision stage at the least in a magazine of the same quality as the previous ones. The same criteria shall apply where other types of publications are included.
  3. The works must be published, accepted or sent for publication after the doctoral student’s first enrolment on their doctoral studies and within a maximum of six years prior to the presentation of their thesis.
  4. The co-authors of the works shall state in writing their agreement to the work’s use as part of a doctoral thesis and their recognition of the student as the main author of the work.
  5. The co-authors of works used in a thesis who do not have a doctoral degree shall waive the right to present those works as part of another doctoral thesis.
  6. Presentations of theses in this format shall be adapted to the University of Girona's established doctoral thesis format criteria.
  7. The requirements for managing, registering and appointing the doctoral thesis defence panel for this presentation format will be the ones established in the University of Girona’s Doctoral Studies’ Academic Regulations.

These instructions have been fully valid since their date of approval and of mandatory compliance since 1 October 2010.
