The Bachelor's degree in Social Work at the University of Girona offers students the chance to acquire the skills required to perform the profession in accordance with the references approved by the school organs and taking into account those defined in the main European countries. The study plans for the Bachelor's degree in Social Work at the University of Girona aim to give students the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the following functions in professional practice: Assistance: detection and psychosocial treatment of individual, group, family and community needs, alongside management of services and benefits that facilitate and guarantee the exercise of citizenship rights. Prevention: prevention of the appearance of developing situations of social exclusion, poverty and marginality, as well as of worsening of psychosocial problems as a result of evolutionary development and of situations of dependence and vulnerability. Mediation: mediation in conflict resolution among persons, families and social groups, including the relations between institutions and citizens. Promotion: promotion and development of social initiatives to support people and social groups in acquiring the skills and competences that allow them to face their needs and conflicts, decision-making processes and taking on responsibilities. Introducing the opportunities that social groups have at their disposal, motivating them to have access to these opportunities and helping people, families and social groups to develop the emotional, intellectual and social answers necessary to allow them to use these opportunities. Mobilisation: mobilisation of individuals, families, groups, organisation and communities in order to improve their well-being and capacity to solve their problems. Transformation: changing the social conditions that generate situations of inequality, exclusion, discrimination and injustice through the development of programmes and projects aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens and especially particularly vulnerable groups. Planning and assessment: design, development and execution of social projects and programmes with groups and networks, contributing to the development of social policy. Adjusting institutional resources to the specific situation of each person or group at the level of assistance, facilitating detailed precise information about the options and limits of institutional resources depending on the circumstances specific to each case. Management and administration: directing, coordinating and administrating social services and programmes. Research: design and development of research projects aimed at increasing knowledge of the social reality, of the characteristics of given populations, of persistent and emergent needs and the development of good professional practices.

Social work is carried out in a broad range of intervention areas and in services promoting autonomy and support for dependence: in public Authority, in social and NGO initiatives and in private entities and companies. Among others, we want to point out the following areas: Basic social services: teams of basic and primary social care (town councils, local councils, consortia, etc.), home care services, open centres for children, etc. Specialised social services: children’s care (reception centres, “CRAE” residential education centres, family integration and adoption services, etc.) family care (women in situation of male domestic violence, residential reception centre, etc.), care for the dependent elderly or those at social risk (day centres, residential centres, etc.), care for people with physical, mental or sensory disability (specialised day care centres, occupational centres, residential reception centres, etc.), attending to social problems deriving from mental illnesses, prevention and care in drug addictions, reception and social care for immigrants and refugees, reception and care for homeless people, etc. Health: health centres, hospitals, mental health services, social health centres and services, etc. Justice: juvenile justice (technical advice services, mediation with victims, application of measures in open and closed environment, etc.), courts (technical advice services, victim support office, family mediation, etc.), prisons (commissions for prison social care, rehabilitation services, etc.). The practicum is a key cornerstone in training Social Work students as it enables them to gain first-hand knowledge of the profession and develop the competencies, skills and attitudes it requires. The Practicum enables the development of the bachelor’s degree’s three educational areas: knowledge, skills and attitudes. The practicum's general goals are: To inter-relate the classes’ theoretical space with the praxises carried out in the professional world. To include and apply training centred on methodology, contents and technical procedures with professional practice, taking values and attitudes into account as relevant elements. To restore the necessary relationship between the university and professional worlds. It is taken during the first six months of the degree's fourth year, so that student have already achieved an important theoretical body that enables them to make the most of the experience of their practicals.
The Bachelor's Thesis (TFG) focuses on independent learning, where the emphasis is on the students’ capacities to carry out study work/original and rigorous exploration and undergo a viva before a committee/tribunal of teachers. This work is aimed at the application, integration and development of the knowledge, capacities, competencies and skills required for the bachelor's degree and professional practice. Students will be advised by a tutor both individually and as part of a group.
Students can complete part of their degree programme abroad through the Erasmus programme, which enables them to carry on their studies whilst undertaking an international exchange with academic value in a European university.
