Brief CV

My teaching and research activities began in 2003, when I joined the Cell Biology area of the Department of Biology at the University of Girona, with the obtaining of a pre-doctoral scholarship for the Training of Personal Researcher (BR02/03), one year after obtaining the Bachelor's degree in Biology. During the pre-doctoral period, in 2006, I spent a month in the Animal Health Research Group of the Institut d'Agrobiotecnología-Agrobioteknologiako Institutua (IdAB) CSIC-UPN-Government of Navarra (Pamplona), and the results were presented in the form of a poster at the "13th Annual Conference of the European Society for Domestic animal Reproduction (ESDAR)". During the pre-doctoral period I also obtained a Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology (2006) and a Master's degree in Food Biotechnology (2008).

In 2008, I obtained my doctorate, with the thesis entitled "Improvement of the sperm quality of the seminal doses of breeding Piétrain males by filtration in several matrixes" (Excellent Cum Laude). Three articles published in scientific journals (indexed in the JCR) were derived from the thesis chapters: "Development of a protocol for multiple staining with fluorochromes to assess the functional status of boar spermatozoa" (Bussalleu et al., 2005); "Effects of filtration of semen doses from subfertile boars through neuter Sephadex columns" (Bussalleu et al., 2008) and "Effects of matrix filtration of low-quality boar semen doses on sperm quality" (Bussalleu et al., 2009). In addition, following the results of the thesis, two research projects were requested: "Design of a marketable prototype (integrated system) of filtration of immature porcine semen, with matrix glass beads and Sephadex G-25, for the recovery of quality seminal doses, refrigerated or frozen" (2006-2007); and "Design of an integrated filtration system of immature porcine semen, with Glass Beads matrix, for the recovery of refrigerated seminal doses" (2009-2011).

In terms of international projection, I have carried out several stays of research, advice, training and scientific-technical work at research centers and universities around the world, such as at the Universidad Nacional Agraria de Nicaragua (2013), in the Institute of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in Shanghai, China (2014); New Granada Military University of Colombia (2016). Of all the research stays, the one I carried out at the Department of Virology at the University of Ghent, Belgium, between October 2010 and March 2011, should be highlighted, as a result of which I am co-author of an article entitled "Antigenic subtyping and epitopes' competition analysis of porcine circovirus type 2 using monoclonal antibodies”. It is also worth noting the six stays at the "Reference Andrology Laboratory" (RAL) of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, in the years 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, lasting between two and three months, depending on the year. As a result of these stays, two articles have been published: Identification of Trueperella abortisuis contamination in extended boar semen" (Bussalleu and Althouse, 2017) and "PCR detection method for discerning Serratia marcescens in extended boar semen" (Bussalleu and Althouse, 2018). Six posters or oral communications have also been presented at different national and international conferences as a result of this collaboration, which continues to this day. Currently, two articles are being written as a result of the results obtained.

My lines of research are about the culture of epididymal cells in pigs, the histology and histochemistry of the accessory glands of pigs, the techniques for improving the sperm quality of breeding male pigs (thesis research line) , the cryopreservation of pig semen or in vitro fertilization in pigs (line of which I directed a thesis). So, my main line of research has focused on the biotechnology of porcine reproduction, specializing more specifically in the study of bacteriosemina, within the framework of the sanitary control of porcine semen. In the search for alternatives to antibiotics for pig semen exteneders I work on the use of antimicrobial peptides and, more recently, on the use of lactic derivatives to combat bacteriosemina. This scientific background is contrasted, as a whole, from the publication of a total of 36 scientific articles with external evaluation (all in journals indexed in JCR and Scopus), of which I am first author and corresponding author in 9 and , corresponding author without being first author in another. Of these published articles, 27 of the 36 articles were published in top-quartile journals, with an average JCR Impact Index of 2147 (range 3127-1526) in WOS and 25 of 36 in the first quartile in Scopus. It should be emphasized that of all the publications, 12 are specifically on the research line of bacteriosemina. I have also participated in 84 publications derived from national (22) and international (62) conferences with external evaluation. Of these, it should be noted that 27 deal specifically with bacteriosemina and the most recent one with the use of lactic derivatives to combat it (2022).

In addition, I have written three outreach articles for national magazines, and I am the author of the book chapter "Quality improvement of boar seminal doses", published in the book "Boar Reproduction: Fundamental and New Biotechnological Trends" (2013). I am also co-author of 2 chapters in the book "Biotecnología reproductiva en porcino: estado actual y retos de futuro" (2008) and author of 1 chapter and co-author of 3 more in the book "Manual de Techniques de reproduction asistida en porcino ” (2006). I have participated in 34 national and international R+D+I projects funded in competitive calls from Administrations of public or private entities, as well as in 10 contracts, agreements or non-competitive R+D+I projects of administrations or public entities and private I have also co-directed two doctoral theses: Eva Torner, “In vitro production of porcine embryos. New insights into optimization of culture media with relevance to sex ratio purposes”, (2014), extraordinary Doctorate prize (2014); and Lliana Sepúlveda, "Bacteriospermia and porcine reproduction: effects on sperm quality and fertility potential of boar spermatozoa" (2016). Both obtained the qualification of Excellent Cum Laude.

I am currently an Interin Tenure Professor (2014-2020, 2021-present), having previously been an Associate Professor (2007, 2008, 2020-2021), a full-time Visiting Professor (2008-2009) and a Assistant Professor (2009-2014). During these 17 years, I have taught a total of 22 subjects in the Biology and Environmental Sciences degrees, the Nursing Diploma and the Biology, Biotechnology and Medicine Degrees; of these 22 subjects, I have fully or partially designed a total of 6. I have also taught 6 subjects in the Masters in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine and Food Biotechnology, having fully or partially designed 2. In addition, I have  also directed 10 Master's theses and 23 Bachelor's theses . I am the academic editor of the magazine "Animals" and I was responsible for double degrees at the Faculty of Sciences during the years 2018 and 2019. Since 2023 I am the responsible for Gender and Diversity at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Girona.
