Research Interests

During my PhD I was interested in the determination of synoptic patterns in the western Mediterranean, working with Dr. R. Romero from the UIB and carrying out collaborative projects with Dr. Sonya Legg at Princeton University specialized in modelling of coupled ocean-climate systems.

Currently my main line of research is focused on the study of sediment and microplastics transport in coastal systems (costal seagrasses and saltmarshes) where circulations generated by tides, gravity currents can be found. These studies are carried out in both the laboratory and the field, and they are focussed on determining the geomorphologic changes in the presence, absence of vegetation or fragmented canopies.

I have developed a range of research that can be divided in two areas: Research and teaching (the actual projects are):

  • Research on coastal sea habitats and the ecosystem services they provide facing the growing pollution by Microplastics

Associated project: PlastikHUM. Accumulation of microplastics in wetlands. Transport and zonation of microplastics. Funded by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad. Partnership with the University of Lancaster and the University of Bremen. https://www.udg.edu/ca/projectes/plastikhum

  • Study the transference of contaminants from sediments to the water column in stationary conditions and during sediment resuspension events caused by wind and storm events.

Associated project: WINDERS. The role of wind-induced sediment resuspension in the eutrophication processes of the Mar Menor. Funded by the Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad. Partnership with the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM, Barcelona), Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) (IEO, Vigo). https://mers.uab.cat/?page_id=2414

  1. Application of active methodologies in teaching

Associated project: EDUSIM 2023: Expansion and consolidation of the teaching network in the Simanjiro area and introduction to service-based learning (ABS) based on sustainable gardens. Funded by the Area of Cooperation for Sustainable Development at the UdG.
