XAVIER CUFI graduated in Physics in the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in 1987. He joined the Computer Vision and Robotics Group (VICOROB) of the University of Girona (UdG) in 1991. He got the doctoral degree in Physics (Computer Vision) in 1998. Xavier Cufí got an associate professor “Titular de Universidad” position in 1999.
The research interests of Xavier Cufí are mobile robotics (mainly the application of robotics to rescue operations), underwater image processing (visual and acoustical), mosaicing, underwater robotics, and designing activities addressed to promote underwater robotics among secondary school students, and to design activities addresed to promote computational thinking and creativity to kids and students. Now, he is the Academic Vice Dean of the Polytechnical School, and former head of the research group UdiGital.edu.
Since 2013 the research of Xavier Cufí changed a bit. Now, he is the head of UdiGital.edu, a research structure dedicated to bring closer the university to society designing activities and workshops for kids and young people mixing technology, sciences, arts and maths with the main objective of fostering creativity, critical thinking, and team group.
Xavier Cufi is the person in charge of the activity “Building and Driving Remote Operated Underwater Vehicles” organized by the VICOROB research groups as an outreach activity. Several editions of this activity since 2008 (more than 3000 students belonging to diferent secondary schools of Girona, Barcelona, Canary Islands and India). He is involved on other outreach research activities related with robotics and underwater robotics Knowledge transfer of the Workshop for Secondary School Students Building Underwater Robots to PLOCAN (Canary Islands), etc.
He is also member of the Organizing Comitee of the First Lego League at the University of Girona. Head of Referees (2010 – 2023, 14 editions).
