Part B. CV SUMMARY (max. 3500 characters, including spaces)

Dr. Josep Vehí is full Professor at the University of Girona and research associate at the Girona Biomedical Research Institute. He is member of the “IFAC Technical Committee on Modelling and Control of Biomedical Systems”. His research interests include machine learning and its applications to biomedicine, modelling and control in biomedicine, modelling and simulation of biological processes and fault diagnosis in complex systems. He is co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed International journal papers and 12 books and chapters of books.

In 2000 Prof. Vehí founded the “Laboratory of Modal Intervals and Control Engineering” (MiceLab). Since 2005, MiceLab is recognized and funded as a “Consolidated Research Group” by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The group has extensive experience in the field of diabetes and is one of the leading groups in the development of the artificial pancreas worldwide. Since January 1st, 2018 Prof. Vehi belongs to the prestigious centre of excellence in diabetes CIBERDEM: "Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Diabetes y Enfermedades Metabólicas Asociadas”.

Professor Vehi has been researching in technologies for diabetes since 2004, obtaining more than three million euros of funding in competitive research projects which have led to several patents and also tools, modules and a prototype of control device for use in clinical trials. So far, he has published more than 60 articles in international journals on the subject. Prof. Vehí has led and participated in several national and European research projects on diabetes technologies.

Professor Vehi is collaborating with national and international teams which have led to research stays, journal articles, collaborative projects and proposals related to diabetes, machine learning, control systems and bioengineering. Some of the most usual and noteworthy collaborations, leading by experts in the fields of diabetes and/or artificial intelligence are the University of Padova, the Imperial College London, the Fraunhofer-Institut Biomedizinische Technik, Ohio University, Harvard University and Politécnica de Valencia. Furthermore, in recent years Vehi has promoted and carried out several clinical studies in collaboration with the main researchers at the University Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta of Girona, the Hospital of the University of Valencia and the Hospital Clínico de Barcelona.
