Which innovative solutions contribute to a CO2-optimized and resource-saving construction site?

For Wiener Linien, an important goal is to make their future construction sites CO2-optimized or CO2-neutral.

Austria has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040. This is an ambitious goal. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is also a challenge for construction site management. Last but not least, the construction industry is a key driver of climate change. Energy-related CO2 emissions and a high consumption of resources are the most important factors in the construction industry. It is precisely here that effective measures must be taken and technologies further developed in order to save emissions. For Wiener Linien, an important goal is to make their future construction sites CO2-optimized or CO2-neutral. To this end, Wiener Linien has already started two demonstration projects in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology. In these two track construction projects, the first use of electrified construction machines is being tested. The first findings for the way to the emission-optimized construction site should be gained. However, Wiener Linien does not want to lose any time on the subject and want to take a closer look at the possibilities of carrying out CO2-optimized construction sites. The focus should be on the big picture. In addition to the energy issue and the aspect of resource conservation, the focus is also clearly on the idea of recycling. In terms of the circular economy, decisions made today in the construction phase contribute to the environmental impacts in the further phases of a construction project life cycle.

The construction site of the future, which we are looking for in the course of the challenge, should look completely different from today's construction sites. The aim of Wiener Linien is to reduce the CO2 balance of construction sites in urban areas as much as possible. To do this, every conceivable set screw on a construction site has to be turned. Wiener Linien are convinced that construction sites can and must be run more ecologically and with fewer emissions in order to achieve climate neutrality. For this reason, innovative ideas are sought that can be implemented. Because the goal of Wiener Linien is very clear, that effective solutions are implemented directly in the context of future tenders and new common practice. The construction sites of the Wiener Linien are structural and civil engineering projects, which include track construction sites, subway construction, stations and stops as well as train stations and garages.

The task of this challenge includes the following areas:

-Construction site processes and procedures Emission and time savings are to be achieved by optimizing routes and construction site transport as well as organizational simplifications. Alternative logistics concepts should lead to overall improved construction site planning.

- Construction site equipment and machines Machines and devices with optimized, ideally alternative, drives should be used. The aim is in particular the use of alternatively operated large construction machines or construction site vehicles. The creation of energy self-sufficient construction containers as well as on-site generation of renewable energy and energy storage options are also on the agenda here.

- Materials and resources: When it comes to the materials used, the focus is on reuse and recycling or upcycling. The use of recyclable materials completes the holistic thinking. The negative environmental impact of the resources used during construction should be kept as low as possible.

Note: This challenge does not seek solutions that are aimed at purely compensating for CO2 emissions from construction sites.
