Us convidemal proper seminari que es durà a terme a l’IEA el proper dia 17 de setembre a les 11h a càrrec del Sr. Jaume A. Badia Boher del Conservation Biology Group de la  Universitat de Barcelona amb el títol de Evaluating the effects of a European conservation programme on survival of a critically endangered bird.

Resum:

“Evaluating the conservation status of animal populations is a challenge in conservation science. In addition, given the present biodiversity crisis, there is a need to improve the effectiveness of conservation actions. Conservation science can strongly benefit from studies that evaluate the efficiency of such actions in order to promote those that are effective. However, such evaluations usually require considerable amounts of data originating from intensive long-term monitoring schemes, which are infrequent given the scarcity of economic resources for conservation. In this study, we took advantage of a comprehensive long-term monitoring dataset on the critically endangered Canarian Egyptian vulture to evaluate the effect of LIFE-project conservation actions on its conservation status. To do so, we analysed the monitoring data within a multievent mark-recapture framework accounting for imperfect detection of monitored individuals. We detected clear increases in survival after the implementation of conservation measures, which are in line with observed increases in population size. Our study highlights the need for generalised monitoring of management actions to generate scientific knowledge on their effectiveness. In addition, in this workshop we will discuss the specific conservation actions that were undertaken, and how these shaped mortality in the study population”.
