Descripció:
The course is designed to encourage students to debate, in an informed and systematic way, the most controversial issues in the theory and practice of human rights. In particular, we will study and discuss the concept of human rights, its genesis and its institutional recognitions; the ethical foundations of human rights, their relevance and limits in political discourse. The exam will consist in two short (max 5 pages) papers (in English). Students will choose the topic of such papers, out of the ones that will be discussed in class.

Continguts

1. Case studies on human rights practice and contestations. These may include: the English movement for the abolition of slavery, the abolition of torture as a means for finding the truth, and the right to an adequate standard of living

2. A brief history of human rights in the contemporary world: between universalism, relativism and political compromise

3. 'Nonsense upon stilts'. Bentham's challenge and beyond: what is the point of 'human rights'?
