In addition to the activity developed in departments, research institutes and specialised chairs, the University of Girona has 101 research groups forming the basis of the research process. The efforts of professors sharing common interests and objectives are brought together in the groups, outside the activity of the departments.

Given the diversity of areas of expertise, the research groups at the UdG are organised into five broad units: Technical, Experimental, Humanities, Health and Social.
