Laboratory of Archaeology

The Laboratory of Archaeology of the UdG is located in the Faculty of Arts.
It is a history teaching laboratory where practical classes in the subjects of Archaeology, Prehistory and Ancient History are held to explore archaeological materials (stone, bone and ceramic tools), paleoanthropology, faunal remains, stratigraphic problems, etc. using the laboratory’s reference collections and manuals.

It is also a research laboratory for professors, grant holders and collaborators in the areas of Prehistory and Archaeology, and in some cases from the area of Art History, which depends of the Department of Geography, History and Art History. There are two main lines of research: Prehistory and the Ancient World.
The Prehistory line includes two principal projects. One involves Palaeolithic studies in northeastern Catalonia focused primarily on the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic cultures of the Girona region. This research is conducted at excavations in the caves of Arbreda (Serinyà) and Ermitons (Sales de Llierca). The other project concerns the study of the previously unknown and rich cave art heritage of the Western Sahara: hundreds of figures engraved in rocks and painted in shelters.

Research on the Ancient World includes various projects that cover a considerable chronological spectrum, from Iberian culture to the Medieval era, related always to Girona and its territory. The study of the Iberian world, especially the final stage of this culture, is based on excavations of the oppida of Sant Sebastià (Palafrugell) and of the mountain of Sant Julià de Ramis. A second project studies the Romanisation of the valley of Tossa de Mar, with intensive territorial surveys and excavations of important archaeological sites. The Late Roman and Early Medieval world is explored at excavations of the Bufalaranya castle in Roses and of Sant Julià. A final, multidisciplinary project is focused on the Cathedral of Girona.

Phonetics Laboratory
http://web.udg.edu/labfon/

The Phonetics Laboratory is a teaching laboratory for the programmes in Catalan Philology and in Spanish Philology. Practical classes are held there in phonetics and phonology, orthography and orthophony, hearing and speech and dialectology. It has all the instrumentation needed to carry out acoustic and articulatory analysis of speech and perceptions tests. A collection of specialised articles and databases on inventories of world languages and the ways of producing the sounds of those languages can be consulted. A wide variety of original self-learning exercises is also available to the students.

It is also a research laboratory for the researchers who work there. The usual UdG researchers are affiliated with the Department of Philology and Philosophy, but members of other departments at the UdG and researchers from elsewhere also collaborate on work conducted in the laboratory. Members of the teaching and research staff and grant holders from the laboratory have worked together to organise several national and international conferences.

The tools and resources of the laboratory and the investigators who carry out research there are available to train researchers in areas related with spoken language. The laboratory projects are public and the laboratory is available to whomever has an interest in using it.

The Physical Geography Laboratory of the UdG is located on the second floor of the southern wing of the Faculty of Arts. It is both a teaching and a research laboratory where practical classes are held for subjects in the area of physical geography: Physical Geography, Applied Physical Geography, Physical Geography of Coastal Landscapes, Physical Geography of Mountain Landscapes, etc. It has all the material needed to hold practical classes with small groups of students: binocular microscopes, stereoscopes, Ph metres, conductivity metres, and collections of teaching materials (herbarium, rock samples, cartographic documents, remote sensor images, etc.).

The laboratory space is also used for research carried out by the academic staff associated with the area of Physical Geography. The principal line of research is biogeography applied to the analysis, the dynamics and the management of landscapes and natural areas.

SIGTE
http://www.sigte.udg.edu/

The University of Girona’s Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing Service (SIGTE) is a technical research and training service specialising in the field of the management and treatment of geographical information.

Ten years after its creation we maintain the innovative and dynamic spirit characteristic of a service that integrates professional, training and research activities.

Taking advantage of our accumulated experience in the geographic information systems sector, we also fulfil the important function of knowledge transfer, collaborating with and giving technical support to teaching and research staff of the UdG who deal with geographic information, as well as coordinating various GIS educational programmes, both on-site courses at the university and distance learning thanks to the use of the most advanced technologies.
