1. THE LAW FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GIRONA

1.1 WELCOME

Dear Student,

It pleases us to welcome you to the Faculty of Law of the University of Girona. For several years our university has been establishing international relations with other universities and faculties of law in Europe and every year we are satisfied by the increasing number of visiting students.

This guide has been written to ease your transition to studying in the faculty, as well as to living in the city of Girona.

The University of Girona and the Faculty of Law are part of a university academic tradition that dates back to the 16th century and that aims to provide our future graduates with excellent teaching. To achieve that goal a large staff of teaching and administrative personnel has been created and a syllabus that offers solid instruction in general subjects as well as in specialised tracks has been developed.

Both the Faculty of Law and the Montilivi Campus offer high quality services to the students, such as the Library, the Centre of European Documentation, reading rooms and computer labs, photocopy services, the Modern Language Service, the Sports Service and housing.

We hope that your stay at our Faculty of Law is a pleasant one.

1.2 INTRODUCTION

DEGREE STUDIES IN LAW

The Law Degree of the University of Girona is organised into five academic years (3,000 hours of theory and practice). Each teaching year is divided into two semesters: September-January and February-June.

The primary objective of these studies is to provide students with sufficient awareness of the realities of the legal world. Students acquire in-depth knowledge of each branch of the legal system and develop specialisations of their choice taking the elective subjects that most interest them. Currently, doctoral and masters programmes are also offered.

Lectures and seminars are given here every year by prestigious lawyers and politicians. Complementary activities, such as visits to various Catalan, Spanish and European legal institutions, are also offered, along with lectures and colloquia. Periodically, very important scientific conferences are organised. For example, every other year, Les Jornades de Dret Català or The Catalan Law Conference is held in Tossa de Mar.
