The syllabuses, in addition to core, compulsory and optional subjects, anticipate other types of credits to freely round out a curriculum. We call them free choice credits.
Each syllabus indicates the number of free choice credits required to obtain the corresponding diploma or degree. They must be taken in accordance with your syllabus and under the guidance of your faculty or school. You can do that by enrolling for free choice subjects or for those subjects that offer free choice vacancies, or by certification of the training or attendance required in academic activities leading to the recognition of credits.
Free choice subjects
- Optional subjects within your degree programme, even if they do not offer any free choice specific vacancies.
- Subjects from any syllabus, provided they offer free choice vacancies.
- Subjects created especially of this purpose. There are two types of subjects in this group:
- Subjects offered by the University of Girona.
- Intercampus subjects, Internet-based and offered jointly by Catalan universities.
Registration for free choice subjects is done at the same time as registration for the other subjects, even if they are offered in other faculties or schools. You must , though, keep in mind that:
- Core, compulsory and optional subjects are offered as free choice subjects at the level and with the requirements corresponding to the degree programme.
- Subjects required for completion of your degree and specialisation, or any others corresponding to a similar degree or contents, cannot be taken as free choice subjects. (Two similar subjects or two subjects with the same name cannot both be taken.)
- The self-registration process takes this information into account to avoid enrolment in subjects which are incompatible with your studies.

Virtual free choice: Intercampus
The Intercampus project, supported by the Catalan Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprises, was created by the public universities of Catalonia and is open to all their registered students. The primary objective is to implement a pilot exchange programme for free choice subjects offered via the Internet (online training).
Participation in this project requires knowing how to use the online training programme (user level computer skills). The necessary tools and connections are available in all the computer rooms of all faculties and schools of the UdG.
This programme lets you set your own work/study pace according to your needs and access the course wherever and whenever you want. Constant feedback, from either professors or other students, can be provided in any situation requiring support or assistance using the included communication tools.
There is only one registration period for Intercampus subjects. Prior registration, which is subject to obtaining the vacancy, is required.

Academic activities for credit
Free choice credits can be earned for any activity evaluated with that intent or for certification of a level of specific knowledge in some areas.
Registration in any activity leading to the recognition of credits must be done with the organising institution. To request credit recognition, after certifying successful completion of the corresponding activity, you must officially register at the academic secretary’s office of your faculty or school within the established period and pay the corresponding fees (25% of the rate per credit, according to that established in the subsidised rates published for university services).
Credits corresponding to certain activities organised by the University of Girona are automatically recognised. Requests for credit recognition can be filed electronically through the online secretary’s office at any time during the course.
Just as you cannot register for any required subjects as free choice subjects, neither can you receive recognition of credits for activities related to subjects that are required for your degree.
