Educational objectives


This masters provides research and professional training in the area of cultural, linguistic, social and educational diversity. The Linguistic Variation and Social Diversity track guarantees a foundation on which to base research in linguistics, both general and comparative, as well as in language contact and language teaching and acquisition, with special attention to multilingual situations linked to immigration. The Teaching Catalan and / or Spanish as a Second Language track offers an integrated training to future teachers of Spanish and / or Catalan as a second language, from both a teaching and a grammatical point of view.

Curriculum structure


The masters includes one research track (Linguistic Variation and Social Diversity) and one professional track (Teaching Catalan and / or Spanish as a Second Language) and so produces graduates with two different profiles. Students must complete one of the two tracks, freely chosen according to their interests.

It is divided into four modules:
  • Module 1. University and postgraduate programme cross-disciplinary subjects (15 credits)

  • Module 2. Cross-disciplinary masters courses: 45 credits (research track) / 39 credits (professional track):
    • Module 2.1. Language learning (27 credits)
    • Module 2.2. Language and society (18 credits)
  • Module 3
    • Linguistic Variation and Social Diversity track (30 credits):
      • Module 3.1.1. Sociolinguistics and Comparative Grammar (18 credits)
      • Module 3.1.2. Language and culture (12 credits)
    • The Teaching of Spanish and / or Catalan as a Second Language track (36 credits):
      • Module 3.2.1. Teaching a second language (12 credits)
      • Module 3.2.2. Grammar. Detailed description of the grammars of Catalan and/ or Spanish (12 credits)
  • Module 4
    • Linguistic Variation and Social Diversity track: research project (30 credits)
    • Teaching of Spanish and / or Catalan as a Second Language track: practicum (12 credits) and research project (18 credits)

Career opportunities


The research track is intended to open the way to continued studies culminating in the completion of a doctorate; guarantees a foundation on which to base research and teaching according to the instructional objectives already mentioned and related with various aspects of descriptive and applied linguistics. The professional track offers an integrated training to future teachers of Spanish and / or Catalan as a second language. Both tracks provide professional training related with social action and cultural management and for activities that require good knowledge of the Spanish and Catalan languages.

Admission profile, previous education requirements and admission and selection criteria


The academic records of professionals and degree holders in language teaching, in primary, secondary and adult education, in immigrant reception, in translation and interpretation, in linguistics, in education, in educational psychology and social education and in sociology and anthropology will be assessed.

The academic records of students who want to be teachers of Catalan or Spanish or who want to do linguistic research will also be taken into account.

Sufficient knowledge of Catalan (level C) or Spanish is required.

Priority will be given to those candidates with the best academic records and having a sufficient level of knowledge in the field.

Pre-registration and registration


Pre-registration must be completed online.

First pre-registration period: will begin on 2 April and will run until 1 July 2007

Admission decisions: on 18 July 2007

First registration period: from 20 until 30 July 2007

If places are still available, a new pre-registration period will be open from 20 July until 19 September 2007.

Admission to the Doctoral programme


Students can apply for admission to the doctoral course of any Official Postgraduate Programme (POP, Programes Oficials de Postgrau) at the University of Girona provided they have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in a POP programme or have an official master’s degree and have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at a university or other centre of higher education. The applications will be reviewed by the Doctoral Council of each programme.
