Educational objectives

The masters in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry aims to expand general training in chemistry or physics with a scientific focus on theoretical chemistry and qualifies students to do rigorous research in this field, to understand and correctly use the wide range of available software or to create new programmes, and to use these tools to design materials in a vast number of fields.

Curriculum structure

A single research track, organised in three modules:

Module 1: Advanced chemistry
A module of 60 ECTS credits, given in the first year at each university, taking advantage of courses offered in other programmes:
30 compulsory ECTS credits of advanced chemistry.
30 specialised ECTS credits of chemistry organised in a broad range of optional subjects of 3 to 6 credits.

Module 2: Theoretical and computational chemistry
A module of 30 ECTS credits, given during the third semester by all four universities and involving a certain amount of mobility among students and professors:
15 ECTS credits of compulsory training in specialised topics of theoretical and computational chemistry, organised in three subjects of 5 credits each.
15 optional ECTS credits from a wide range of different areas providing some perspective on the various fields of current applied theoretical chemistry.

Module 3: Introduction to research in theoretical and computational chemistry
A module of 30 ECTS credits which requires a research stay with a group from one of the four participating universities or from a collaborating institution during the 4th semester and a research project under the supervision of a professor from the selected group.

Career opportunities

Professional opportunities are related with research in various internationally known groups and with leading productive sectors that have cross disciplinary research groups, such as the pharmaceutical and other industries that design materials for catalysis.

Admission profile, previous education requirements and admission and selection criteria

Students who have studied chemistry and/or physics and are interested in doing research in the field of theoretical chemistry, understanding and interpreting the microscopic basis of the behaviour of matter and contributing to the design of new materials.

Current official degrees:
degree in Chemistry; degree in Biochemistry; degree in Physics; degree in Pharmacy; degree in Biology, and degree in Chemical Engineering.

Students who have completed degrees that required an equivalent amount of time (180 ECTS credits) and had the same contents, or students who have received training in chemistry, physics or mathematics which is equivalent to the first cycle knowledge acquired in the degree programmes listed above. Unless these students can prove they have completed additional studies, which the coordinating committee will consider recognising, they will be required to complete 120 credits.

Selection criteria:
1. Academic record
2. Additional certified training
3. Motivations
4. Knowledge of the languages in which instruction is given in the masters
