Residence Card and Visa

EU Students

1- If you are a citizen of a member state of the European Union Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden) or of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), you do not need a visa or any other previously obtained documentation. A valid passport or identity card allows you to enter Spain.

2- If you have a residence permit in an country that belongs to  the European Union but your nationality is not European, you should ask for  Una comunicación de desplazamiento por Estudios EU at the  Oficina de Extranjería in Girona through the UdG. You must do it once in Girona and during your first month of stay. If this is your situation, please send un  e.mail to the  International Office  incoming.oi@udg.edu  and we will inform you about the necessary documents and steps to follow.

Once in Girona

It is not necessary to apply for a residence permit. The necessary documents are only your passport and/or identity card.

If your stay is longer than three months, you must apply for registration in the Central Registry of Foreigners to obtain the Certificate of Registration as a Citizen of the Union.

Even if you are a citizen of the European Union, in order to carry out certain procedures in our country, such as opening a bank account, making an accommodation or work contract, etc., you will need the NIE.

How to obtain the NIE?

You must apply for the certificate of registration as a citizen of the Union in which you will also be provided with the NIE.

Documentation:

  • Application form in official model (EX - 18) in duplicate.
  • Passport or national identity card valid and in force. In case it is expired, a copy of it and a renewal application must be submitted.
  • If you are a student you must provide:
    • Registration of the teaching center.
    • Documentation that accredits to have public or private health insurance. It will be sufficient to provide the European health card valid for the entire period of stay.
    • Responsible declaration of having sufficient resources during the period of residence in Spain.
    • It will be considered sufficient for the fulfillment of these requirements the supporting documentation of participation in a program of the European Union such as the ERASMUS program.

You can carry out this procedure at the address below in person but with a prior appointment ("cita previa").
