Motivation

Catalysis is the key of a wide spectrum of chemical processes, from the academic research lab through the industrial large-scale reactor to the essence of life. Over 90% of all chemicals produced involve catalysts at some stage in the process of manufacturing. Moreover, the discipline of computational chemistry has emerged in the last decades as a perfect partner of experimental laboratory chemistry, having a crucial role on the design, interpretation and prediction of experimental results.
In recent years, many industries, especially pharmaceuticals and petroleum-based ones, have realized the potential of molecular modelling, and have therefore incorporated computational chemists into their research teams.
The Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis is committed to transfer the most recent research in sustainable catalysis to the future professionals of chemistry. The training of professionals specializing in sustainable catalysis is a growing demand from the Chemical Industry. The synthesis of new catalysts and the development of better, more efficient and sustainable catalytic processes is becoming a strategic differentiating factor for many companies that want to innovate in their production processes creating more sustainable products, economical and environmentally friendly, thus satisfying the demands of a market increasingly aware and demanding with the origin and nature of the products they consume.

Course Scope

Prospective students are mainly graduates in chemistry, but the Master is also open to graduates in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, who wish to pursue a career in research, innovation and development, both in the industry and at the university, through access to doctoral studies.
The course will provide students with the skills needed to address the design of new synthesis of products based upon processes catalyzed by transition metals, integrating the most innovative synthetic routes, and directing the students towards a more sustainable, efficient and economical catalytic methodologies. This Master provides also the students the opportunity to endeavor a more theoretical or computational approach to the subject.
