What to do in the event of an accident

1. School accident

School accidents include all physical injuries suffered by the insured due to activities that are directly or indirectly related with being a student, including sports, assemblies, study/internship/end-of-degree trips or similar, so long as they were organised or authorised by the academic authorities of the teaching institutions.

In relation to sports activities, school accidents include injuries suffering due to participation in student championships, internal leagues, along with their respective training sessions, so long as the student forms part of one of the university’s sports teams.

Student internships at companies or institutions other than the University of Girona, as well as academic excursions outside the university, are covered by school insurance, so long as they have been authorised by a teaching institution. Students participating in authorised internships or excursions outside the university who do not have school insurance (as they are more than 28 years old) must be covered by an alternative public or private policy.

2. Transfer to the healthcare centre

In the case that a school accident requires urgent medical assistance, the transfer may be by ambulance or taxi, depending on the following:

  1. The student must have school insurance only. This means that at the time of the accident he or she cannot be registered under any other Social Security scheme (even due to part-time work) because in this case medical and pharmaceutical assistance should be provided by Social Security.

  3. Only the transfer from the university to the healthcare centre is covered. No return journey is provided.
  4. The procedure is: the student pays the ambulance or taxi fare and then brings the receipt to INSS, along with the accident report and any other documents.

3. Public or private healthcare

So long as students have school insurance or are covered by their parents’ or their own health insurance, in the event of an accident they can be attended at any public centre (outpatient client/hospital) or opt for a private centre of their choice. In the case of the second option (private centre), the school insurance will cover the cost according to its own fee breakdown. The student must pay any possible differences. However, in the case of duly justified urgent assistance in which the student has opted for a private centre, he or she will be reimbursed for the entire cost of the first visit. The school insurance will cover the cost of the following visits according to its own fee breakdown.

The students and educational institution must manage the applications for social security benefits regarding the assistance received at private centres and submit them at the INSS Assistance and Information Office.

4. Application for social security benefits 

Applications must be submitted at any of the agencies or Social Security Assistance and Information Centres (CAISS) of the Provincial Department of the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). The CAISS in Girona is located at c/ Santa Eugènia, 40 baixos, tel. 872 08 25 10, fax 872 08 25 01.

Documents required to apply for social security benefits:

  • School insurance application form, filled out and signed. The student can also request this form at the academic secretary’s office of the teaching institution or INSS.
  • DNI or family record book.
  • Non-EU student card (foreign students).
  • Enrolment receipt (including the academic year, the subjects in which the student is enrolled and the payment of the school insurance fee)
  • Other specific documents (medical reports, etc.)
  • Foreigner Identification Number (NIE) (European students).
