Collaborative mapping through humanitarian action

Online Webinar

Several events are being organised all over the world between 10 and 16 November as part of #osmgeoweek, which aims to celebrate geography and create maps with OpenStreetMap, an open mapping of the entire world.

Which is why we at SIGTE-UdG and UNIGIS Girona are joining in #osmgeoweek2019 week by organising an online webinar for learning how to map through collaboration in the context of humanitarian action.

OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is a free and open collaborative project for creating a map of the entire world. Data obtained from GPS devices, orthophotographs and other open data sources are used for this purpose.

It is a project inspired in the Wikipedia system where any user can collaborate by incorporating new elements into already existing maps. All you need do to collaborate is register and acquire a few skills in map editing.

Mapping, a humanitarian tool

Natural disasters kill some 100,000 persons every year and affect or displace 200 million people around the world. Many of the places afflicted by natural disasters do not appear at all on maps. As a consequence, first-aid management and organisation are complicated because there is no necessary information available for taking correct decisions on the ground.

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is an NGO that promotes humanitarian projects with the aid of OpenStreetMap mapping. HOT takes care, among other things, of collecting mapping needs that are reported at humanitarian emergencies level, classifies them according to level of difficulty and/or urgency and publishes the details so that any user can collaborate.

Webinar

Description

The webinar we propose is open to anyone who would like to take part. During the webinar we will show you how to map using OpenStreetMap and, more specifically, through an assigned task, which needs to be mapped within the framework of a humanitarian mission.
