Joint Master in Chromatographic Techniques

Learning objectives

  • Train specialists in chromatographic techniques, analytical techniques currently used at most industries and analytical laboratories, mainly from the practical point of view.
  • Provide the student with knowledge of the most recent trends in chromatographic techniques and provide initiation in research in this field.
  • Train specialists in the use and knowledge of the mass spectrometry and its application in the different fields of science and technology.
  • Provide the student with a current overview of the professional situation through practical classes at top-level companies in the field of chromatography.

Generic and specific skills

The University Master in Applied Chromatographic Techniques will ensure students develop the basic skills listed in RD1393/2007:

  • Possessing and understanding knowledge that brings a basis or opportunity to be original in the development and/or application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • That students know how to apply acquired knowledge and their capacity for resolving problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or more multidisciplinary) contexts relating to their area of study.
  • That students are capable of integrating knowledge and confronting the complexity of formulating judgements based on information which, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of knowledge and judgements.
  • That students know how to communicate conclusions — and the knowledge and underlying reasons supporting them — to specialised and non-specialised audiences in a clear, unambiguous way.
  • That the students possess learning skills which enable them to continue studying in a way that will have to be in a largely self-taught or independent way.

These basic skills are specified in the following assessable and requisite skills for obtaining the qualification

Generic skills:

CG01 - Interpreting and applying the use of the latest trends in chromatographic techniques and mass spectrometry, both in their research lines and in methodologies, resources and problems that are tackled in various scientific-technical areas

CG02 - Taking knowledge-based decisions for organising, planning and developing analytical methodology based on chromatographic techniques for solving the various analytical problems in the fields of industrial, food, environmental, healthcare and other analysis

CG03 - Analysing and judging the importance of managing quality in a scientific environment not just of industries but also analytical laboratories, from a mainly practical point of view

Specific competences:

CE01 - Suitably monitoring the use and extensive current trend of chromatographic techniques in analysis laboratories

CE02 - Analysing the use and application of gas chromatography techniques in current environments both in the world of research and in the world of industry

CE03 - Analysing the use and application of liquid chromatography techniques in current environments both in the world of research and in the world of industry

CE04 - Assessing the application of capillary electrophoresis techniques both in their research lines and in methodologies and specific resources

CE05 - Monitoring mass spectrometry technique and knowing how to apply advanced coupling techniques

CE06 - Designing and planning the current techniques for processing sample in laboratories analysing food, healthcare and environmental samples

CE07 - Appropriately checking the various quality-management systems in laboratories

CE08 - Identifying and interpreting the various laboratory-accreditation and certification procedures

CE09 – Finding effective and real solutions for the various analytical problems by using chromatographic techniques, especially when analysing high-complexity samples

CE10 - Taking decisions to solve any instrument-type problem that may appear in the area of chromatographic techniques
