Genetic Ichthyology Laboratory

(LIG)

The Laboratory of Genetic Ichthyology is basically devoted to the study of sea populations and continental fish through the analysis of genetic changes among populations.

Genotypes are worked out through analyses of gene sequences, microsatellite loci, SNPs obtained from a chain reaction of the polymerase (PCR) and genomic techniques. The results obtained are used in the management of fisheries of the studied species and contribute to overcoming the existing dichotomy between fishing stock and biological population. Our studies are useful to know the distribution of the genetic resources in and between populations, and environmental adaptations. Necessary data for the suitable design of programmes for the conservation of species. The laboratory currently also collaborates in several research projects on the conservation of biodiversity in other species besides fish.
