Participation in the GIREP-MPTL 2018 international conference

Jordi Colomer, Teresa Serra and Marianna Soler attend the GIREP-MPTL 2018 in San Sebastian, Spain, from 9 to 13 July 2018. This meeting addresses research and innovation in physics education. The members of the Environmental Physics research group contribute with an oral presentation to expound research conducted within the framework of their “divulgation and innovation in the teaching of physics” research line, and of the STELYS project.

Jordi Colomer, Teresa Serra and Marianna Soler participate in the GIREP-MPTL 2018 in San Sebastian, Spain, from 9 to 13 July 2018.  The conference is organized by the University of the Basque Country, the Groupe International de Recherche sur l'Enseignement de la Physique (GIREP) and Multimedia in Physics Teaching and Learning (MPTL), and addresses research and innovation in physics education. It is endorsed by the International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) of the Commission 14 of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the European Physical Society (EPS) - Physics Education Division, and the Real Sociedad Española de Física (RSEF).

The members of the Environmental Physics research group of the University of Girona (UdG) contribute with an oral presentation, entitled “Evaluating knowledge and assessment-centered reflective-based learning approaches in a first year physics class”, to expound research conducted within the framework of their “divulgation and innovation in the teaching of physics” research line. This presentation addresses the development of knowledge and assessment-centered learning approaches within a reflective learning framework in a first year physics class in a university faculty. The quality of students’ reflections was scored using a Self-reporting Reflective Learning Appraisal Questionnaire at the end of each learning approach. The results showed the differences between the approaches based on reflections on the learning control through self-knowledge, by connecting experience and knowledge, as well as through self-reflection and self-regulation. Assessment-centered activities fundamentally help students identify aspects of their attitudes towards, as well as regulate, their learning.

This research has been conducted within the framework of the STELYS project. STELYS is a supportive learning strategy developed at the Department of Physics of the UdG for primary and secondary schools, based on STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teachers that yield best in-house and outdoor practices. STELYS involves demonstration practices, cross-institutional practices, scientific presentations, public science and in-field innovative projects, with the aim of transmitting enthusiasm for science and making it closer to the general public.

This contribution to the GIREP-MPTL 2018 conference has been granted by the University of Girona, through the call of Development of Professional Teaching 2017.
