Myrmecology

Myrmecology and ant communities vs disturbances:
Ants are one of the most ubiquitous groups of animals in land ecosystems and an important players in several ecological processes such as seed dispersal (myrmecochory). The research in this interaction is aimed at the role, consequences of and to ants, and benefits that plants as well as ants can gain from this relationship. We are also studying the impact and reactions of ant communities facing various disturbance, such as: change ofuse of land over time; wood extraction; climatic change and forest fires. We are interested in both the response to level of species and to level of functional groups.

Reproductive physiology and chemical communication of ants:
On the other hand, we are also studying the reproductive physiology, behaviour and chemical communication of Argentine ant queens, one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species according to the ISSG (Invasive Species Specialist Group), with the final goal of developing specific methods for controlling invasions.

Service for testing the effectiveness of ant biocides by companies:
We also carry out tests on the effectiveness of ant-biocide products, in both laboratory and field conditions, following the EU Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR).

Researchers:
