Internships

WHAT de we mean by WORK PLACEMENTS?

A work placement is training activity undertaken in any public or private entity, domestic or foreign, with the aim of applying and complementing the training acquired, making the student aware of the reality of the professional area where they will carry out their professional activity and developing competencies that make it easier for them to enter the job market, passing of which is conditional to obtain the qualification in accordance with the previsions established in the corresponding course plan.

Work placements should:

  • To develop the specific competences of the profession, as described in the degrees.
  • Give students experience of real professional scenarios and increase their chances of success in entering the job market.
  • Recognise their aptitudes, attitudes and personal competences, their training needs and analyse their strong and weak points.
  • Contrast the acquired academic learning and real situations found in the professional world in such a way that the student is capable of understanding the purpose of the various disciplines that make up the course.
  • Reflect on what each student has done and learned during the placement.

In the bachelor's degree courses given at the Faculty of Sciences at the UdG (Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences and Chemistry) external curricular placements are enrolled on in the optional 6-credit subject ‘Work Placement' and have a duration of 150 hours.

WHO CAN DO THEM?

  • Bachelor's degree students who have passed at least 50% of the degree credits and are enrolled in third year or subsequent courses. 
  • Dual bachelor's degree students enrolled in 3rd year onwards and who have passed at least 43% of the Dual Bachelor's Degree programme.

You must be enrolled for the current year.

Only some placements can be carried out during the degree.

Options

  1. Placement agreed (pre-assigned) - the student contacts a company / institution / department / university / research centre
    • Work placements with companies in Catalonia and Spain.
    • International internships (Possibilitat de fer Student Mobility for Traineeships   ). The company publishes the places agreed to on the company internships web platform  naming the student it has made the agreement with (the student’s national ID or UdG number needs to be stated at the end of the offer form). The offer will be validated after a few days by the Vice-Dean's Office for External Relations and the internship agreement prepared for signing.
  2. Faculty offer - The student agrres to the faculty offer and signs up for the placements published on theonline work placement platform  by order of preference.

Procedure

Placements agreed on

  1. The student validates their CV on the online work placement platform .
  2. The company publishes the placement agreed to on the online work placement platform , indicating which student the agreement has been made with.
  3. The Vice-Dean of External Relations validates the proposed placement.
  4. The Faculty prepares the Educational Cooperation Agreement (placement agreement) and sends it to the student and the company for both parties to sign and return. 
  5. The agreements are then signed and recorded by the Faculty.  
  6. Each of the parties involved (company, studying, UdG-FC) will have a copy of the agreement signed by all parties. 
  7. The student enrols on the "internships" course and begins their stay with the company on the start date established under the agreement.

The student remains covered by theschool insurance provided they have the placement agreement signed by all the parties.School insurance only covers Spain. If the student is carrying out a placement abroad, they need to contact the Faculty's academic secretary's office.

Faculty offer

  1. The student receives an e-mail from the Faculty in which they are told the deadlines for the relevant call for applications. To consult the placements offered by companies, simply go to the following website and enter the username and password you use for accessing La meva UdG: https://apps.udg.edu/prem
    • Students can register as a candidate for placements they would like to apply for, in order of preference.
    • The company is responsible for selecting students and validates the students in order of preference so the faculty can take them into consideration when allocating placements.
  2. The Faculty assigns a candidate to each available placement, attempting to satisfy the priorities of candidates and companies as far as possible.
Once a student has been assigned a placement:
  1. Students can find out what place that have got using the web platform.The student contacts their tutor within the company and their academic tutor to specify the details of the placement assigned. If there is any change in the information published on the offer (e.g. the start and end dates of the placement), the student must notify the change by email to practiques.fc@udg.edu .
  2. The Faculty prepares the Educational Cooperation Agreement and sends it to the student and the company for both parties to sign and return. 
  3. The agreements are then signed and recorded by the Faculty.  
  4. Each of the parties involved (company, studying, UdG-FC) will have a copy of the agreement signed by all parties. 
  5. The student enrols on the "internships" course when the Educational Cooperation Agreement is received and begins their stay with the company on the start date established under the agreement.

Matrícula

L'estudiant s'ha de matricular de l'assignatura "pràctiques en empresa" obligatòriament abans de començar l'estada a l'empresa i una vegada finalitzats els tràmits de signatura del conveni (no hi ha un termini establert). 

L'estudiant tria el grup de matricula de l'assignatura en funció de quan vulgui presentar la memòria.

  • GRUP F la convocatòria d’avaluació és al febrer 
  • GRUP J la convocatòria d’avaluació és al juny 
  • GRUP S la convocatòria d’avaluació és al setembre

WHAT DOES THE STUDENT HAVE TO DO DURING THEIR PLACEMENT?

  • Students should be familiar with and fulfil the established work plan, following the instructions given by their tutor in the partner company, entity or public or private institution, under the supervision of their university tutor.
  • Students should comply with the university’s current rules on curricular placements.
  • Students should stay in touch with their academic tutor throughout the activity, communicating with them and telling them about any incidents that may arise during their placement.
  • Students should give the university all the documents and reports requested for follow-up and evaluation, depending on the type of placement.
  • Students should join the external partner organisation in question on the agreed date.
  • To fulfil and comply with the external partner entity’s operating regulations and policies.
  • Students should prepare a placement plan and complete with due diligence the activities agreed with the external partner organisation, in accordance with the collaboration rules established.
  • Students should safeguard confidentiality in relation to the company, entity or public or private institution’s internal data and must not use any data obtained during their placement without the express authorisation of the company, entity or public or private institution and the University of Girona
  • Students should at all times be respectful towards the partner company, entity or public or private institution’s policy, in order to protect the good name of the University of Girona.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO SUBMIT AND ASSESS THE STUDENT'S REPORT

Suggested format of the report:

The report must be at least 5 pages long and should be no more than 15 pages in length (including any appendices) and should include:

  • Introduction to the subject  of the placements carried out, description of the company/institution (type of activity, organisation, work dynamics, agents involved, and so on)
  • List of the activities carried out (methods, methodology, instrumentation, campaign design, analysis protocols, learned and practised techniques, and so on), usefulness of each of the techniques.
  • Where possible, some examples of result gathering (laboratory files, field notes, placement diary) and the results can be added.
  • Research of information (data base, framework directives...),bibliography

Submitting the report

Please bear in mind that the deadline for submitting the report varies depending on the enrolment group of the subject.

Before the deadline established by the faculty, the student must upload their report to the company work placement website.

How to submit the report

Evaluation:

A numerical score will be given (between 1 and 10) and the following will be assessed:

  • 50% Company tutor's report  - qualitatively assessing the student's adaptation (work habits) and work performed depending on the required knowledge and difficulties encountered.
  • 50% Academic tutor's report  (PAT tutor for work placements) - assessment of placements performed and skills acquired by the student during their stay at the company, based on the report submitted.
