Presentation

Why a Doctoral degree in Law, Economics and Business?

Studies included in the doctoral programme in Law, Economics and Business:

  • they offer high quality research training to enable participants to undertake a career in research and/or teaching in academic institutions, research centres, higher education schools, businesses, consultancy firms and/or government organisations;
  • they enable the development of research skills that ensure students are able to coordinate and undertake the research itself;
  • they generate new knowledge, both in basic and applied research, and
  • they invigorate the research activity in the fields of law, economics and business.

Why study in Girona or Vic

  • Although Girona and Vic are relatively small Universities, the Doctoral Programme enjoys the collaboration of nationally and internationally recognised research groups.
  • Because the Departments of Law, Economics and Business are small, doctoral students receive individual and personalised supervision.
  • With respect to the quality of life in all towns with over 10,000 inhabitants in Spain, Girona and Vic are among the top 50.
  • The joint programme in Law, Economics and Business enables doctoral students to approach questions from different perspectives if they deem it appropriate.

skills developed by students on the Doctoral Programme in Law, Economics and Business

  • The systematic understanding of the field of study and mastery of the research skills and methods related to law, economics and business.
  • The capacity to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial research or creation process.
  • Capacity to contribute to expanding the borders of knowledge through original research.
  • The capacity to conduct a critical analysis and evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas
  • Capacity to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general, in the field of tourism, law and business, in the languages habitually used among the international scientific community.
  • Capacity to foster, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social or cultural advances in a knowledge-based society.

Learning objectives

Access

The Doctoral Programme in Law, Economics and Business is governed by Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, that establishes the organisation of official doctoral studies programmes. The access requirements are those set out in this Royal Decree and which can be consulted at the following web address www.udg.edu/doctorat/acces.

Admission criteria

Report by a researcher from the doctoral programme who is willing to undertake the direction or co-direction of the thesis, on the suitability of the applicant in terms of their previous education and the suitability of their research project.

In their appraisal of the candidates, the Academic Committee of the doctoral degree will also take the following aspects into account:

  1. Academic record: 60%
  2. Professional experience and knowledge of languages: 30%
  3. Motivation and extent to which the project is aligned with one of the lines of research that make up the programme: 10%

Training courses

Regarding educational activities, the School of Doctoral Studies organises courses, seminars and other cross-disciplinary educational activities (soft skills) directed at research training and assisting with the writing and presentation of the doctoral thesis. We ask that the courses be given in English as our language of choice, although Catalan is the language most frequently used. They are generally 10-hour courses or seminars. There are a series of activities that are transferable and are of interest to all doctoral programmes, and others that are specific to a particular doctoral programme

  2. Publications resulting from the thesis and its quality indexes (up to 1.5 points)

  5. Participation in research projects (up to 0.5 point)
  6. Reports from reviewers and thesis board members (up to 1 point)
  7. Other aspects of the author’s CV related to the thesis, such as awards or acknowledgements (up to 1 point)

Compulsory training for doctoral students

Compulsory education:  20 h. of cross-disciplinary education to be chosen from the courses offered by the School of Doctoral Studies.

The Academic Committee considers it highly advisable to attend one of the following courses:

  • "Defining, writing and publishing doctoral works on Economics and Business".
  • “Writing and publishing a doctoral thesis in Law"

All the courses offered on the doctoral programme

Criteria required in the doctoral theses for summary of publications

Minimum of 3 publications resulting from the doctoral student’s own research, where they have been the main author. All of these will have to have been published or accepted after the first enrolment on the doctoral programme. At least 2 of the 3 publications will have to be articles published or accepted in academic journals. The third (or subsequent) work may consist of an article in an academic journal or in a chapter forming part of a more extensive work.

Further to the previous requirements, the following optional ones must be added:

Option 1: At least one academic article will have to have been published or accepted in journal in the first or second quartile of JCR-WOS or SCOPUS.

Option 2: Minimum of 3 articles, of which two must be published or accepted for publication in a journal from any quartile of the JCR-WOS or the SCOPUS, or the two first quartiles of the IN-RECS, INRECJ or ERIH, or the Latindex catalogue (covering at least 30/33 of the indicators established for printed journals and 32/38 for electronic journals).

If changes occur in the quality catalogues mentioned, or new catalogues are incorporated, the Academic Committee will be able to adjust the criteria established, providing this does not imply a change in the level of quality required.

Seminar

The Doctoral Programme in Law Economics and Business (DEE) organises a seminar for its doctoral students. The doctoral students have the possibility of presenting either their research project or the status of the research project which is already under way. Following this there will be a discussion with the attendees of the seminar and the members of the Academic Committee of the Law, Economics and Business programme.

The seminar is open to all teachers at the UdG and to all the doctoral students on the Law, Economics and Business programme. The participation of the students is voluntary, except in the cases referred to in point two of the following paragraph. The seminars will be organised yearly at the end of each academic year.

The organisation of the seminars has a twofold purpose: On the one hand, to give general academic support to doctoral students. On the other hand, students who ask for an extension in order to enrol on the fourth or fifth year of their doctoral studies (full-time students) or on the sixth or seventh year (part-time students) must present the status of their research at the seminar. In these circumstance, where an extension is requested, a written presentation is not considered to be sufficient. Instead, it needs to be accompanied by an oral presentation at the aforementioned seminar. This not only enables the doctoral student to receive external feedback on their work, it also provides the Academic Committee with information on which to base their decision with regard to the requested extension.Alternatively, doctoral students can provide evidence of having presented the status of their work at some other seminar organised by a department, by a research institute, by a research group or by a faculty of the UdG
