Dades generals

Curs acadèmic:
2023
Descripció:
The importance of tourism management academic research is well acknowledged as a source of knowledge creation, which should inspire the design and introduction of innovative and sustainable policies, processes and products in the industry. Academic research is founded on strict methodological procedures and requires specialized training in a range of research and analytical techniques. In addition to academic research, these same techniques are applied to other types of non-academic research, e.g. consultancy, business, advocacy, or policy research. Without adequate training in these techniques both academic and non-academic research practices will not be carried out with rigor and the results will not have the required validity. As a consequence, both, the new knowledge created through academic research and the managerial recommendations derived from non-academic research projects, will not have the adequate level of reliability, and therefore the processes of new knowledge creation and managerial decision-making will not only not be effective, but it may be misleading.

Observacions

The teaching consists of a few seminars open for discussions. The purpose is to present a critical discussion and assessment of some of the main concepts of the course. There are also in-class tutorial activities to support the development of the assignments.

The teaching strategy is to present a critical overview of academic research practice. Students will develop and present an assignment in which they will use their master thesis proposal as a framework to be trained in the use of research methods. The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student to extend and reinforce his or her understanding of the material of the course and to contribute to the student development in terms of scholarly inquiry, analytic and critical thinking, collaborative work, and effective communication.

Students must also expect to work effectively in teams and to prepare formal written assignments in a clear and logical manner. Thus, this course aims not only to develop the student’s critical understanding of a range of research methods and processes but also to encourage the student to present their analyses in a logical and convincing manner.
