The Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering is directly focused on providing professional solutions in any socio-economic sphere that involves the use of computer systems and tools. The curriculum is different to others in the field as it is adapted to the characteristics of our social and economic fabric, whilst still including a solid scientific and technical foundation. The participation of the business sector is explicit in the curriculum, since it incorporates the option to do a placement in a professional environment. As an engineer, students will be able to design and build new computer tools, and also to maintain and update any management, systems, industrial computing and new technologies applications.The Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering offered by the University of Girona has received an award for excellence from the Agència Catalana d’Universitats. Only 10% of the courses in Catalonia have received this award.

It's useful to know

The courses that make up the first year of the Computer Engineering degree include essential subjects of a general nature: calculus, algebra, logic and physics, and specific computing subjects for an introduction to programming and computers. To undertake this first stage, students should have passed similar subjects during their upper secondary school education or at other educational institution. Students keen on solving challenges, the ability to analyse problems, with a skill for abstraction, imagination and creativity, those who love precision and logical reasoning, etc. are sure to enjoy this course, which will open the door to a dynamic profession and many career options.

The objective of the course is to facilitate skills in the design and analysis of computer systems. This also includes the creation and adaptation of computer systems to the specific needs of end users. In parallel, it gives students basic scientific and technical engineering knowledge from a computing perspective to facilitate the adaptation of continuous technological changes that occur in this field.

Competences

This degree aims to train students so they have the competencies necessary for a career in computing. To summarise, some of the competences that students will acquire are as follows:

  • The capacity to draw up, organise, plan, develop and approve projects in the area of computer engineering.
  • The capacity to direct projects in the area of computing.
  • Capacity for designing, developing, evaluating and ensuring the accessibility, ergonomics, usability and security of the systems, services and computer applications.
  • Capacity for defining, evaluating and selecting hardware and software platforms for the development and performance of systems, services and computer applications.
  • Capacity for designing, developing and maintaining every type of system, service and computer application, and for ensuring their quality.
  • Capacity for designing and developing computer, centralised and/or distributed architectures, which integrate hardware, software and networks.
  • Capacity for finding out, understanding and applying legislation relating to the IT industry.
  • Knowledge of the basic issues and technologies that provide skills for learning and developing new methods and technologies.
  • Capacity for solving problems through initiative, decision making, independence and creativity.
  • Expertise for carrying out measures, appraisals, valuations, expert's reports, studies and reports in the IT industry.
  • Capacity for analysing and assessing the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.
  • Knowledge and application of the basic elements of human-resource economics and management and project organisation and planning.

Access

Access requirements

  • Upper secondary school education. Access: university entrance examinations (PAU), general phase. Admission: weighting of subjects examined in university entrance exam (PAU) linked to the branch of knowledge of Engineering and Architecture.
  • Higher level vocational training cycles (CFGS). Access: all CFGS. Admission: weighting of subjects examined in university entrance exam (PAU) linked to the branch of knowledge of Engineering and Architecture.
  • Over 25s. Must pass the preferential option of the entrance exam: Engineering and Architecture.
  • Over 40s. Appraisal of any professional experience related to the bachelor's degree the applicant wishes to study for and suitability for the course, as demonstrated at interview.
  • Over 45s. Must pass entrance exam and demonstrate suitability at interview.
  • Other special types of access recognized under current regulations.

Careers

Graduates in Computer Engineering will be able to carry out their work activity in very diverse sectors and in any socio-economic area involving the development of tools and computer systems. In general, such work may include:

  • Application analysis, design and programming (analyst / programmer profile).
  • Graphic and multimedia software development.
  • System, network and data-base administrator.
  • Industrial computer science (control and process robotics and programming).

Ninety-seven percent of our pupils find work in its area within a year of finishing their engineering studies (source: AQU 2017 report). According to the November 2015 study “Labour market entry of university students” carried out by the Secretary of State for Education, Vocational Training and Universities, Computer Engineering appears in sixth place among the best positioned qualifications for work insertion. Since 2011, it has risen from 69.1% to 93.4%.

Continue studying

The Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering gives direct access to the Master in Computer Engineering. Also the students who wish to continue the doctoral studies will be able to do so under the EPS doctoral programme and within some of the many nationally and internationally acclaimed research groups in the field of computing.

Practical work experience

All subjects have a practical aspect that carries a lot of weight on the course. You will carry out the practical projects in small groups in laboratories with equipment adapted to current needs. Business is very much present in the Polytechnic School. As a student of the Degree in Computer Engineering you will be able to do a work placement in a company. You can choose from among a wide range of offers proposed each year.

Bachelor's thesis

During the last year of the degree you will complete an End of degree project, in which you will demonstrate the knowledge you have acquired over the course of the degree. You will do a single piece of work that will be evaluated by a tribunal made up of members from each study area. The End of degree project is an engineering project on the subject of your choice, which you will carry out under the supervision of a teacher. If you wish, you can complete this in a company or research group. Each year, the Association of companies that supports the Polytechnic School and the professional engineering schools award prizes to the best end of degree projects.

Mobility

The Polytechnic School (PS) maintains relations with universities from all over the world. There are several mobility and exchange programmes that will allow you to study abroad, carry out the bachelor's thesis or expand your studies: Erasmus, Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus, Socrates, IAESTE, SICUE-Séneca, Balsells scholarships, Josep Maria Ginés i Pous scholarships, etc.

Non-EU foreign students TIE (foreign-national ID) preferably, or passport where TIE is not available.

2. Proof of receipt of allowances or exemptions, under section 1.1.3 of the Enrolment Regulations.


3. Documents accrediting access to the university:

The University does not require any document to be produced, as such information is accredited by the University's Admissions Office. Students who have sat the university entrance exams (PAU) are advised to download their accreditation documents from the university’s Access Portal in the same year they passed their exams, as they will stop being accessible on 31 December.
Pre-enrolled university students with a university degree not obtained from the UdG Original and photocopy or certified copy of the degree or its provisional certificate 
Pre-enrolled university students with transferred academic records (students enrolled at other university centres) Academic certificate featuring courses and qualifications and confirming payment of transfer fees
Students with access from record transfers The University does not require students to present any documents, as they will have had to produce them beforehand during the transfer-call period

4. An enrolment-application form, where appropriate (provided by the teaching institution)


5. Only where a student is not the holder of the bank account paying for their enrolment, a communication/change of bank data form (available on the Forms page) and a photocopy of the bank account holder’s ID.

The documentation must be submitted either when you enrol or before the 19 November at the Academic Secretary’s Office of the teaching centre (except for the large-family card in the event of renewal, which must be presented before 31 December).

Online enrolment

Online enrolment is the University of Girona's electronic enrolment system where enrolment is carried out via the internet, and is available for most study programmes.
