It's useful to know

One of the distinctive features of the Bachelor's Degree in Cultural Communication is that it looks at the present-day world through the lens of a diverse range of cultural and humanistic disciplines. For this reason, the media, a wide variety of cultural productions and audiovisual icons from our world will become the object of analysis and critique in different modules of the degree. In an environment in which the traditional and emerging cultural industries increasingly call for highly qualified, multi-faceted, discerning professionals, we want to make the reflexive consumption of culture compatible with the technical skills and abilities most needed in today's society.

Learning objectives

The Bachelor's Degree in Cultural Communication from the UdG Faculty of Arts aims to integrate in a single course analysis of the foundations of contemporary culture and the impact that the media has on society today. The international academic reference point for this programme is, above all, the Anglo-Saxon world's Cultural and Media Studies with the scope that this route offers for revitalising and strengthening the Arts programmes in our faculty. The nature of these studies places emphasis, on the one hand, on the creation and transfer of cultural contents to society and, of the other, collaboration and links with a diverse and emerging professional world.

Skills acquired

Over the course of the degree in Cultural Communication students will acquire a long list of skills, but here we would like to highlight the following:

  • Ability to critically analyse different cultural productions.
  • Evaluate the sustainability of one's own proposals and performance in the field of cultural and communication studies.
  • Reflect on the role and ethical sense of the communication professional in the contemporary world.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, in a coherent manner that is adapted to the target audience, through oral and written discourse that is cohesive, understandable and correct.
  • Formulate new (original and creative) proposals for tackling known and new problems.
  • Select and make significant use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the activities that are typical of professions linked to communication and culture.
  • Work in teams and develop roles typical of cooperative work (collaboration, leadership, discussion and shared reflection) attending to the democratic values of mutual respect and non-discrimination.

Careers

The graduate in Cultural Communication will have the skills needed to access a diverse range of professions such as: cultural journalist for different types of media, press officer, communications officer, cultural management, content creator for digital and multimedia environments and specialist content transfer in different environments. The bachelor’s degree in Media and Cultural Studies, therefore, opens doors at both a national and international level, and within the local area and province in careers linked to communication and culture.

University master’s degrees

The UdG offers an extensive master’s-degree programme. Master's degree courses offer advanced, specialised or multidisciplinary training, aimed at providing students with an academic or professional specialism or an introduction to research. These are official courses that enable students to move on to study for a doctoral degree.

Doctorate degree programmes

The doctoral studies are aimed at providing students with advanced training in research techniques and include the preparation and presentation of a doctoral thesis, consisting of original research work. To join a doctoral programme you need to have a minimum of between 60 and 120 ECTS credits at official university master's degree level or equivalent.

Calendar and timetables

The academic calendar marks the beginning and end of classes, non-teaching days, holidays, exam periods, and so on. The administrative calendar marks the periods to make the different formalities administrative.

Placements

Students have to gain a series of credits, as part of their studies, which correspond to internships in companies or institutions relating to the bachelor’s degree they are studying. The teaching load is determined in accordance with the curriculum.

Bachelor's thesis

To obtain the degree, students have to complete a bachelor's thesis (TFG) which serves to assess the general skills they have acquired over the course of the degree programme and offers a summary of the skills and knowledge they have acquired. The teaching load of the thesis depends on the curriculum of the degree.

Mobility

Students can complete part of their degree programme abroad through the Erasmus programme, which enables them to carry on their studies whilst undertaking an international exchange with academic value in a European university.

They also have access to grants for placements at universities in Spain and on other continents, thanks to bilateral agreements, the SICUE programme and the expansion of the Erasmus+ Programme.
